I think it contains some rat poison, there is also what they call 'la calavera' and unfortunately the children arrive at the hospital having lost a hand, their feet or even having been deafened or blinded and in some cases have died.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr Eneida Melgar, Director General of the Children's Hospital\u003cbr/\u003eShe made reference to a particular type of firework which have the appearance of sweets.\u003cbr/\u003eThis type of firework is favoured by children because they are easy to light.\u003cbr/\u003eThe danger lies in the fact that young children, confused by their innocuous appearance, swallow them.\u003cbr/\u003eBut these fireworks contain highly poisonous phosphate compounds which, as they dissolve in the body, can cause serious internal lesions and liver and kidney damage.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Spanish)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Hopefully there will be some control by the authorities for the coming festivities. There is a product coming out called 'rasca pie' (a firework), they are the size and have a wrapping that looks like a sweet so we have seen cases where children have even eaten them as if they were a sweet.
