Close-up fire \u003cbr/\u003eLapland is the home of log cabins and open wood fires.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with winter temperatures that reach as low as -50 degrees Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit) one enterprising hotel owner is offering an alternative mode of accommodation.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Kakslauttanen Hotel resort in Saariselka, northern Lapland, guests can spend the night in an igloo. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd if the icy house is too cold for them, there's the option of switching to an igloo made of glass.  \u003cbr/\u003eA room with a view.\u003cbr/\u003eThis glass igloo is part of the Kakslauttanen igloo village nestled in the forests of the Saariselka fell area of Lapland.\u003cbr/\u003eLast winter 300 honeymooners stayed at the resort according to owner and igloo builder, Yussi Eiramo.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the glass igloos are popular with Honeymoon couples because they can star gaze and hope to catch sight of the Northern Lights through the igloo's domed, glass roof. \u003cbr/\u003eThe temperature  is kept at a cosy 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 degrees Fahrenheit) by heated glass that also serves to keep the roof clear for star gazing and admiring the northern lights. \u003cbr/\u003eThe specialised glass also ensures that while guests can see out, no-one can see in.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clouds served as curtains on the night of our visit, but Yussi assures us that although most tourists spend only one night in the igloos, many star gazers stay more than a week to study the constellations. \u003cbr/\u003eIt costs 166 Euro ($214.5 USD / �145 pounds Sterling) for one night in a glass igloo. The price includes a full breakfast buffet and sauna in the main resort the following morning.  \u003cbr/\u003eFor 16 Euros less  ($21 USD / �14 pounds Sterling) guests can enjoy a somewhat chiller night in a snow igloo.  \u003cbr/\u003eYussi explains that the entire structure is built from snow. The only exception is the mattresses placed on the ice bedstead. \u003cbr/\u003eWith walls 1metre thick the tiny domes are kept at a toasty -3 degrees centigrade (26.6 degrees Fahrenheit). \u003cbr/\u003eUp to 4 people can stay in the igloo. \u003cbr/\u003eDown sleeping bags, socks and hats are supplied, but Yussi warns that guests still need to wear long thermal underwear in bed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe igloo comes kitted out with plenty of mod cons. \u003cbr/\u003eAn ice bedstead.\u003cbr/\u003eA light.\u003cbr/\u003eA sealskin rug.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd a smoke alarm. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the morning guests can enjoy a full breakfast and a well deserved sauna. \u003cbr/\u003eYussi and his team use 5,000 cubic metres of snow each year to build the 15 igloos and accompanying snow restaurant and ice chapel that are constructed in January.  \u003cbr/\u003eEach individual igloo takes one day to build. The village takes one month. \u003cbr/\u003eTemperatures must reach -20 degrees C (-4 degrees Fahrenheit) before work can commence. \u003cbr/\u003eThe igloos last until the end of April before they melt, only to be built again the following winter.\u003cbr/\u003eFinland has experienced some warmer winters in past years, but Yussi says he's not yet worried about the effects of global warming on his business. \u003cbr/\u003eHe believes the climate is in constant change. \u003cbr/\u003eHe points out that last winter the mercury in Saariselka hit -40 (-40 degrees Fahrenheit) and recalls the Christmas of 1936 when the lakes and rivers did not freeze over. \u003cbr/\u003eSo the snow igloo walls are sound for now, but could tourists at the resort be convinced to stay there?\u003cbr/\u003eOne couple on their first visit to Finland decided they'd like to give it a go. \u003cbr/\u003eBut others weren't convinced. \u003cbr/\u003eSo it's back to the Kakslauttanen
