I'm not going to let this stop me.  It's been a long battle,\" said Turner.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there may still be a long way to go.  \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers and doctors are only now starting to understand the long-term effects of HIV in aging survivors.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"Individuals who are doing really, really well who are now in their 50's 60's and even beyond that, are getting diseases that are related to the ill effects that you get from being infected so long,\" says Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland.\u003cbr/\u003eStudies are examining how heart disease, thinning bones and a list of other health problems typically seen in the senior years seem to hit many people with HIV when they're only in their 50s.\u003cbr/\u003eThe research comes at a critical time for an aging HIV population.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that already a third of the nearly 1.2 (m) million people living with HIV in the US are over 50, and by 2020, nearly half are expected to reach the age.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople 50 or older accounted for 17 percent of new HIV diagnoses in 2009, according to the CDC's latest data. \u003cbr/\u003eThat is up from 13 percent in 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eThere aren't as good counts in poor regions of the world, where access to life-saving medications came years later than in developed countries.\u003cbr/\u003eBut even in hard-hit sub-Saharan Africa, home to most of world's HIV-infected population, studies suggest 3 (m) million people living with HIV are 50-plus. \u003cbr/\u003eBy 2040, Fauci said, that could reach 9 (m) million.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, people who are diagnosed and treated early can expect a near-normal life-span but the new focus is on what these pioneering survivors can expect as they reach middle age and beyond.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's almost created a new sub-specialty of medicine, namely people whose HIV disease is under control but who are now facing, prematurely, many problems that they may or may not have faced in life later on. They're facing it at a higher incidence and they're facing it earlier,\" says Fauci. \u003cbr/\u003eIt appears both the virus and the medications that suppress it take a long-term toll on the body.  \u003cbr/\u003eHIV triggers body-wide inflammation as a person's immune system tries to fight the virus, a process that persists and can quietly damage organs even with good medications, says the CDC.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say HIV is not acting in a vacuum, and patients like Turner are having to add treatments for other conditions on top of their strict HIV regimens. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Now, I've got to see a kidney doctor, the liver doctor, the neurologist.  So, it's a lot more appointments, a lot more medical attention,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eTurner's says she has the body of a rapidly aging 63-year-old, though she's only in her early 50s.\u003cbr/\u003eEven with the added aggravation, she says it's better than the alternative.  It wasn't all that long ago that HIV was still considered a death sentence.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the beginning, I never thought I would see my kids graduate high school.  I've seen them graduate high school.
