Wide of area where Lorca is believed to be buried\u003cbr/\u003eArchaeologists on Tuesday continued exhuming a mass graves across southern Spain where supporters of Francisco Franco allegedly executed renowned poet Federico Garcia Lorca at the outbreak of Spain's Civil War.\u003cbr/\u003eGarcia Lorca believed to have been executed at the start of the 1936-39 war in Viznar a town near the ancient city of Granada by supporters of Franco, the army general who unleashed the conflict by rising up against the elected, leftist Republican government.\u003cbr/\u003eThe site reportedly became one of many execution grounds for perceived opponents of Franco where people were rounded up, brought there and shot, their bodies dumped in a ravine in unmarked graves. \u003cbr/\u003eGarcia Lorca, perhaps the war's most famous victim, is widely considered Spain's best 20th century poet and playwright.\u003cbr/\u003eBut while his executioners may have wanted to erase all memory of him, a lingering dispute over whether to open Garcia Lorca's grave is now a key\u003cbr/\u003efocus of a movement to give proper burial to the untold thousands believed to have been murdered by Franco's militias.\u003cbr/\u003eGarcia Lorca was shot along with a school teacher named Dioscoro Galindo Gonzalez and two labour union activists - Francisco Galadi and Juan Arcolla - on August 18, 1936 and their bodies are believed to be buried near an olive tree outside the town of Alfacar, close to Viznar.\u003cbr/\u003eFor years, the poet's descendants blocked requests by the Galindo and Galadi families to open up the grave. \u003cbr/\u003eTired of waiting, Galindo and Galadi relatives took their case to crusading investigative magistrate Baltasar Garzon, who had recently begun a probe into Spain's Civil War missing.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's treading sensitive ground, however, in a nation where both sides committed wartime atrocities but which tried to put all the suffering behind it in the interest of rebuilding from a war that left an estimated 500-thousand dead.\u003cbr/\u003eThe families' request is part of a surging nationwide movement to give proper burial to the thousands of people known to have been killed by supporters of Franco and buried in mass graves.\u003cbr/\u003eFrancisca Cordoba's father is one of the missing persons suspected dead, he is believed to have been buried in a mass grave at the now abandoned Malaga Municipal Cemetery. \u003cbr/\u003eCordoba insisted that she was not looking to re-open \"any closed wounds.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"What we want is that they are given a proper burial,\" Cordoba said. \u003cbr/\u003eAndres Fernandez, the Director of Malaga Cemetery Exhumation Project, said he is reminded each day of the importance of the work his team is doing. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When the relatives come to visit and you listen to their experiences, after so many years of repression, and the fact that it was a taboo subject, it all affects you,\" he told AP Television. \u003cbr/\u003eThe death of Garcia Lorca has been shrouded in controversy for decades.\u003cbr/\u003eThe renowned poet's family have long preferred to let the matter rest, leaving one of the 1936-39 war's most intriguing mysteries - the whereabouts of the poet's body - unresolved.\u003cbr/\u003eMost believe his body along with the three others, lies in a site close to an olive tree and which has since been designated a memorial park to local victims. \u003cbr/\u003eBut others claim the burial spot is some 400 metres (437 yards) away.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral thousand others are believed to have been shot and dumped at the same gorge.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a bid to build a reliable list of victims, Garzon asked church leaders, city mayors and other authorities this month for any information they have about victims of Franco's forces from the time of his military uprising in July 1936.\u003cbr/\u003eFrancisco Gonzalez, the President of the Granada Association for the Recovery of the Historical Memory, said he expected public support for the project because it was for a good cause. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When an association follows a noble cause as this is, society will support it including the media. We have a social force in favour of reason and justice,\" Gonzalez said. \u003cbr/\u003eFranco's rebellion triggered a civil war against the left-wing, democratically-elected Republican government, and was followed by a 36-year dictatorship.\u003cbr/\u003eFranco decreed that anyone who opposed him could face execution, and many of his victims were civilians. \u003cbr/\u003eGarcia Lorca was among those who disappeared with no record of their fate or final whereabouts.\u003cbr/\u003eLorca, who was 38 when he died, is best known for tragedies such as \"Blood Wedding\" and his poetry collections \"Poet in New York and \"Gypsy\u003cbr/\u003eBallads.\" His work draws on universal themes such as love, death, passion, cruelty and injustice.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is no official record of how many
