Wide shot of the Hiranandani township \u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists in India are calling for new buildings to be made greener. \u003cbr/\u003eAn international conference on Green Buildings held in Mumbai has recommended a more committed and focused approach towards ecological sustainability to add impetus to the green building movement in India.\u003cbr/\u003eCalling for Mumbai to become the country's green building capital, leaders from the building industry and policy makers said there was an urgent need to innovate and introduce energy-efficient models for lighting, air conditioning and heating systems in new constructions.\u003cbr/\u003eAs concerns about climate change and global warming increase, so does the demand for Green Buildings in India.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe conference held in Mumbai last week was organised by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).\u003cbr/\u003eExperts say the Green building concept has to encompass environmentally friendly building design, waste management, water management, recycling and energy efficiency and that the industry must focus on climate change as a critical factor in this area. \u003cbr/\u003eThe business of green building essentially involves use of energy from sustainable sources - water and other natural resources in the construction industry.\u003cbr/\u003eGreen building practices adopted in residential and office buildings can substantially reduce or eliminate negative environmental impacts. \u003cbr/\u003eIGBC has managed to convert more than 240 million square feet under green buildings from merely 20,000 sq ft in 2003.\u003cbr/\u003eIt plans to build 1 square foot of green building for every Indian by 2012 - which would translate into more than 1 billion square feet. \u003cbr/\u003eThe inaugural session saw the distribution of ratings to 18 LEED-rated green buildings in India. \u003cbr/\u003eLEED or The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building rating system is a third-party certification programme, and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Green Homes Rating System also addresses issues such as the handling of consumer waste, water conservation and conservation of natural resources like wood. \u003cbr/\u003eTo date, 68 projects have been registered for the rating covering more than 88 million square feet of built up area.\u003cbr/\u003eThe projects are spread across various regions of the country including  Kolkata, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Goa, Mumbai, Pune Hyderabad, Chennai, Kerala, Bangalore and Pondicherry.\u003cbr/\u003eAn exhibition on Green Building products held during the conference showcased more than 100 new products, technologies and services - providing a platform  to home makers, architects and residential developers to network and form alliances .\u003cbr/\u003eNiranjan Hiranandani, Managing Director of the Hiranandani Group of township builders, highlighted the initiatives that add value to the green buildings concept at all levels. \u003cbr/\u003eThese include lighting plans in building passages, planting and nurturing trees, implementation of small sewage recycling plants at corporate and individual housing level and better water management and recycling projects.\u003cbr/\u003eBuilders like the Hiranandani Group have already fully embraced the concept of green buildings. The real estate developer, renown for it's garden and landscaping design, has planted more than 300,000 trees on various projects since 2000.  \u003cbr/\u003eTheir Powai residential township in Mumbai has the largest sewage recycling plant in the city. It has the capacity to treat 2.2 million litres per day. \u003cbr/\u003eWith both a macro and micro focus on water management, the township has a rain-water harvesting system and a viable water recycling unit.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a shortage of 24.7 million houses in India according to the ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation.  They say the shortfall is a great opportunity for the construction of more green homes. \u003cbr/\u003eIndustry estimates also show that India can garner 25-30% of the world wide Green Homes market, which is expected to see about 15 (b)illion US dollars in investments by 2012. \u003cbr/\u003eThe need for bringing down costs of green building material, creating skill infrastructure and enhancing awareness were also under discussion.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to an IGBC report, if energy efficiency measures are incorporated at the design stage, the potential for energy savings is 40-50%. \u003cbr/\u003eEnergy-efficient techniques, however, come at a price -  an incremental cost of more than 5% compared to the conventional building design.  But real estate developers remain hopeful - they say the high cost of constructing green buildings will eventually flatten out to make the concept more attractive to buyers wanting to invest in a
