A...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eVideo games and computer technology is getting so realistic you can literally feel it.\u003cbr/\u003eHaptics - the technology of physical interaction with the digital world - is all the rage at the SIGGRAPH emerging technologies show in Los Angeles. \u003cbr/\u003eA rainbow of colour at SIGGRAPH 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eThis eye-catching exhibition represents the new generation of digital technology which allows the user to physically interact.\u003cbr/\u003eSplashDisplay from Japan allows people to throw white cubes into the tray of polystyrene balls.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeakers hidden below the surface manipulate the balls and sophisticated lasers and lights create the colourful patterns.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the cubes hit the surface a fountains sp rays balls into the air like a rainbow volcano.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's SIGGRAPH emerging technologies show is all about the manipulation of the digital world.\u003cbr/\u003eUsers are looking for more tactile experiences and nothing demonstrates this better than ClaytricSurface.\u003cbr/\u003eThis projected display can be squished and moulded like a lump of clay.\u003cbr/\u003eA depth camera registers the user's movements and a vacuum pump controls the surface.\u003cbr/\u003eClaytricSurface is the work of Tokyo's University of Electro-Communication and it proves a big hit with show visitors who are busy finger painting their bumpy masterpieces.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is an example of haptics - the biggest trend at this year's SIGGRAPH. Don't worry if you haven't heard of haptics - much of this technology is nascent so it won't be seen in the consumer marketplace for five to ten years.\u003cbr/\u003eEvan Hirsch, creative strategic consultant for game companies, explains the concept: \"The easiest way to think of haptics are devices that give you physical input or take physical input to control a digital virtual world and that's really exciting.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA plant is not exactly what you'd expect to see at a technology show, especially one attracting this much attention.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there's more to this than meets the eye, the power cable clipped to its stem is a clue... Mother Nature has been given the haptics touch.\u003cbr/\u003eBehind the plant is an hypnotic and nebulous graphic.\u003cbr/\u003eTouching the plant in different areas manipulates the display.\u003cbr/\u003eThe name of its species? Botanicus Interacticus according to its makers.\u003cbr/\u003eA single wire placed in the soil, transforms plants into multi-touch, gesture-sensitive, and proximity-sensitive controllers that can track a broad range of human interactions.\u003cbr/\u003eIts developers are considering future applications in the home or entertainment industry.\u003cbr/\u003eIvan Poupyrev, senior research scientist at Disney Research in Pittsburgh says Disney wants to see reaction to this fun sheer entertainment device that lets you touch something 'reaI' rather than just a computer screen.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is a technology which allows to make everyday living plants interactive to reach gesture and touch by people. When you touch it or when you slide your hands on it the plant can respond, play sound, control a character, create beautiful visuals, move something, vibrates slightly and creates this immersive and unexpected experience which you would not expect form touching a plant,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eWes Burke, works at a studio production house making 3D art and is visiting SIGGRAPH for the first time.\u003cbr/\u003eHe gets hands on with Botanicus Interacticus.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The plants behind me were pretty neat. I guess a lot of the technology are being used in situations you didn't think or where he was showing the plants to give you a different experience where before you see a lot with plasmas and TV's and where kids can go up and see a visual change so that was kind of neat,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHaptics also have a place in video games, especially now the games industry is more all-incorporating following the smartphone revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eEvan Hirsch says: \"The trend in gaming right now, especially in the emerging technology group at SIGGRAPH is the bridging of the physical word and the digital word. Games used to be something that men did in dark corners of bedrooms but now it's something that families can do together through Facebook or social or like these physical devices you are seeing here at the show where we take gaming mechanics and interact with them in a physical means where you can touch them and parts of it or pIants are part of a game control or my mobiIe phone right now affects the game and drives the graphics in real time so that is where the really exciting things are happening is bridging these two worlds.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt SIGGRAPH 2012, thousands of computer graphics and interactive technology professionals are gathering from all six continents at the Los Angeles Convention Centre, so it's an important place to discuss the very latest trends.\u003cbr/\u003eHe adds: \"What's really exciting about gaming now and we've never had better visual graphics in our lives. Seven years ago you could only watch 640 pixels by 480 pixels on your television with a video game, you now have that on your iPhone. Your game consoIe now has a high definition movie at 60 frames a second in real time where you control it. That's really exciting but what's really exciting from a games point of view is, mobile phones have just made everyone a gamer.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThis man is playing tennis.\u003cbr/\u003eThere might be no strings on his racquet but he can feel every strike of the ball.\u003cbr/\u003eThis virtual tennis uses Ungrounded Haptic Rendering Device for Torque Simulation.\u003cbr/\u003eIt gives the impact of a real tennis ball, measuring impact accelerations through the hoIIow racquet.\u003cbr/\u003eFarzam Farbiz from the Institute for Infocomm Research is one of the system's creators and says this takes it one step beyond anything on sale today.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we have developed here is an ungrounded solution without any cables. You just hold the tennis racquet and you play with a racquet where there is nothing inside. When you hit the virtual baII, you actualIy feel the racquet has hit the baII but the baII is not there!
