And he is always jumping with the hind leg and the front legs occurs in its normal gait patterns like a trotting dog, it's the left and the right limb, and its alternating all the time. While the hind limb is just jumping that is the only possible gait of this remaining limb" explains Gross.
The researchers compared normal dogs with dogs with a front leg missing and those with a back leg missing and found that the dogs had different coping techniques or 'compensation strategies'.
Gross says that dogs with missing front legs (fore limbs) struggled more than dogs with back legs (hind limbs) missing.
"When studied the movement of these dogs we found differences of the dogs with the fore limb amputation and hind limb amputation and dogs with the fore limb amputation use a different strategy."
For those canines with a missing forelimb the remaining limbs must undergo careful adaptation to co-ordinate with each other.
If the back leg is missing the front legs act as they would in a four-legged dog with little or no compensation strategy needed.
Gross explains that this disparity is due to the distribution of body weight.
"The limb function ... the front limb is for body support and the hind limb is for propulsion (pushing) the body. And on the hind limbs they support more body weight so when you have a dog with a missing fore limb it might be more difficult for them to locomote (move) than for a dog with a hind limb amputation".
The research is part of an EU project to improve robot efficiency and usability is intended to help develop robots to adapt in the event of losing a leg.
The investigations are still ongoing and the scientists hope to study the movement of other animals and humans in order to improve robotic locomotion.
The research was presented at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Meeting in Prague on Thursday 1st July 2010.
animals wacky
Vecna Technologies (VNR)
Massachusetts, United States - Recent (quality as incoming)
1.
