Rowan Williams exiting Canterbury Cathedral \u003cbr/\u003eThe world's Anglican bishops gathered at England's Canterbury Cathedral on Sunday, for their once-a-decade summit, the Lambeth Conference.\u003cbr/\u003eThe enormous task at the heart of this year's gathering was to try and keep the Anglican family from breaking apart over the Bible and homosexuality.\u003cbr/\u003eWith its private prayer phase over Saturday, the business of the Lambeth Conference began, but it was hobbled by a boycott: about one-quarter of the invited bishops - mostly theological conservatives from Africa - were not attending.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 650 bishops who were there included a mix of traditionalists, moderates and liberals, all with divergent ideas about what Anglicans should believe and how their fellowship should operate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the Anglican spiritual leader, led a three-day closed-door session earlier in the week focusing on the role of the bishops as seen through the Gospel.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking to the gathering,Bishop of Colombo Right Reverend Duleep de Chickera said the reality is that they were a wounded community.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Some of us are not here and that is an indication that all is not well. It is not a crisis that can be resolved instantly,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe indicated that a schism could be avoided, through faith and tolerance.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The journey ahead is a long arduous one, a journey that will demand our prayers, our faithfulness, our mutual trust in each other and of course our trust in God, who makes reconciliation possible,\" said de Chickera.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliams designed the entire gathering without any votes or resolutions, instead, the bishops will hold daily Bible study and small group discussions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 77 (m) million-member Anglican Communion has been splintering since 2003, when the Episcopal Church, the US Anglican body, consecrated the first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.\u003cbr/\u003eRobinson's election also complicated Anglican relations with other Christians.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican's No. 2 official, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, said in a letter of greeting to the conference that was released on Saturday night that new issues in the relationship between the two branches pose a further and grave challenge to the long-standing goal of unity and rebuilding ties.\u003cbr/\u003eAnglicans split from Rome more than four centuries ago when English King Henry VIII bolted in 1534 after he was refused a marriage annulment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vatican has spoken against the Church of England's recent move to appoint women bishops.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliams barred Robinson and a few other problematic bishops from the Lambeth Conference to ensure broader participation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he invited US leaders who consecrated Robinson and bishops from other Anglican provinces that accept gay relationships.\u003cbr/\u003eRobinson has travelled to Canterbury anyway, hoping to meet with as many overseas Anglican bishops as possible.\u003cbr/\u003eAdvocates for gay and lesbian Anglicans have
