Wide of all three cars\u003cbr/\u003eA group of enterprising students in Indonesia has developed a new eco-friendly car.\u003cbr/\u003eIt might not travel at the speed of a bullet, but this slim three-wheeler does have aerodynamic appeal. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a curious vehicle, looking like something between a bullet train and a go-kart.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it is being hailed here as being at the forefront of eco-friendly motoring.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the work of students from Indonesia's Institute of Technology in Bandung who are trying to develop environmental solutions for motorists.\u003cbr/\u003eThis car is called Rajawali - the Indonesian word for hawk.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has been in development since September 2009 and now the mechanical engineering students are finally road-testing their vehicle.\u003cbr/\u003eRajawali still uses regular petrol, but the students fitted a much smaller lawn mower engine for fuel-efficiency.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students have adjusted the throttle opening of the engine and its electronic control to make it highly efficient.\u003cbr/\u003eThe body of the car is made from carbon fibre, an extremely light material used on Formula1 cars.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause of its slim proportions, the three-wheel Rajawali is designed to fit only a single passenger.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring recent tests at a racing circuit, the 35cc car consumed a litre of fuel (0.26 US gallons) for a distance of 300 kilometres (188 miles).\u003cbr/\u003eRajawali team member Roberta Adji Viantoro says: \"The car has the shape of a drop of water, and it has a very little friction force. It also has three wheels with little friction force. In theory this car should consume a very efficient amount of fuel.\"\u003cbr/\u003eA rival team of students is out testing its own car.\u003cbr/\u003eSimilar in appearance to Rajawali, this is HEAVE - that's High-Efficiency, Ethanol-Powered, Aerodynamically-Optimised Vehicle, although the acronym fails in the English translation.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike Rajawali, this car is running on something cleaner than neat petrol - that's ethanol.\u003cbr/\u003eInspired by vehicles from the United States and Brazil, HEAVE runs on the pure alcohol fuel.\u003cbr/\u003eThe body uses a mix of carbon fibre and bamboo, which is eco-friendly, renewable and biodegradable.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, despite its credentials HEAVE could not match Rajawali's economy.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the circuit test it consumed a litre of fuel over 132km (82.5 miles). Still considerably more efficient than the average family hatchback but some way behind their fellow students.\u003cbr/\u003eHEAVE project manager Elingselasri says: \"We can use our imagination because the car is just a prototype. These things make the car unique.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe also believes there is room for growth in ethanol fuel cars.\u003cbr/\u003eThis final prototype is called Cikal.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike its rivals, Cikal doesn't look a million miles from what we see on city roads today.\u003cbr/\u003eThis urban car has a carbon fibre body built around an aluminium chassis.\u003cbr/\u003eCikal uses a 50cc moped engine, running on petrol.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause the car is less aerodynamic and larger than its rivals it only managed to cover 31km (19 miles) to the litre - but to put this in context, that's about twice as economical as the average family petrol hatchback.\u003cbr/\u003eCikal project manager Teuku Naraski says: \"The reason why we made an urban car is because we want to be a step closer to actually putting this car on public streets and being used by the public. The potential is really big. In terms of dimension, our car is similar to a normal car. In terms of power, our engine is also quite powerful.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAnd thinking big, the Cikal team is already looking to the future and its next project.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a small lab on campus, team members meet to discuss their next prototype car. \u003cbr/\u003eThis wire frame model and computer design will one day become Cikal 2.\u003cbr/\u003eThe students hope to improve on the original design, making the car lighter and using a hybrid petrol/electric motor.\u003cbr/\u003eNaraski believes there is a real future for eco-friendly cars in today's world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Eco-friendly cars are very important because we know that greenhouse gas effects are getting really bad. future.\u003cbr/\u003eBut they have left behind something to be proud of.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a limited budget, time and facility, they have sown the seeds for what could be the next big green
