We have a fully-fledged laboratory capable of doing pesticide residue monitoring. And in the laboratory we looked at 12 different brands of the most popular soft drinks being sold in and around Delhi, and were able to show, very clearly, that the soft drinks that are being sold in Delhi, on an average, the Coke brands had 30 times higher pesticide residues, and the Pepsi brands, Pepsico brands, had 36 times higher pesticide residues. that their soft drinks contained dangerous levels of pesticide residue. \u003cbr/\u003eThe New-Delhi based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) claimed in a report this week that levels of pesticides in the PepsiCo Inc. brands tested were 36 times higher than European Union standards. \u003cbr/\u003eThe centre said the average pesticide level for Coca-Cola products was 30 times higher than EU guidelines.\u003cbr/\u003eTwelve samples of Pepsi and Coke purchased in and around the Indian capital contained toxic pesticides and insecticides, including lindane, DDT and malathion, the Centre said.\u003cbr/\u003eIt said the toxins could, if consumed over a long period, cause cancer, damage to the nervous and immune systems, and birth defects. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Centre acknowledged that Indian brands also have high pesticide levels, because agricultural pesticides are in the country's ground water, but said the focus was on Coke and Pepsi because they account for more than three-quarters of the bottled soft drinks consumed in India.\u003cbr/\u003eThe top executives of the two rival companies held a rare joint news conference to reject the allegations. \u003cbr/\u003eRajhiv Bakshi, Head of Pepsico, India, said the claims \"should be disregarded forthwith.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCalling the report \"baseless\", Bakshi demanded the claims be verified by an independent and accredited laboratory capable of conducting sophisticated tests for pesticides.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Sanjeev Gupta, president and chief executive officer of Coca-Cola India, challenged the assertion that the soft drink sold in India was different from that sold in other countries.\u003cbr/\u003eThe CSE did not say which laboratories it had used in its tests, but a similar report by the Centre in February, on bottled water sold by Coke, Pepsi and other companies, was accepted by the companies. \u003cbr/\u003eGupta, in fact, said that Coke had checked all its processes and established new testing procedures on the basis of the previous report.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, canteens in India's Parliament this week stopped selling the soft drinks, and in a display of unity, ruling coalition and opposition lawmakers together called for further investigations of the report.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough many people in New Delhi said they would continue to buy the brands in question, there were signs that distrust of the companies was growing.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday hundreds of Hindu nationalists vandalized a Coca-Cola office in northern India and attacked shops selling
