Wide, low angle of oxen ploughing field\u003cbr/\u003eWith all the odds against them, farmers in Pakistan are getting on with the job of replanting crops in their land that was hit by devastating floods earlier this year.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the fertile soil in the area has been damaged, and many farmers in northwest Pakistan couldn't imagine growing a winter wheat crop this year, easing fears of shortages in the country's staple food.\u003cbr/\u003eKalam Khan fills a sling with wheat seeds and sets off behind his oxen and plough, sowing land that almost three months ago was under 1.5 metres (five feet) of water. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the next field, children bounce on the back of a tractor turning soil.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the fields of Zakhi Kona, in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa Province, many farmers still have to plough their land in the traditional way using oxen, as the metal blade cuts up the earth. \u003cbr/\u003eOnly a few have the luxury of being able to use a tractor to pull their plough. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Kalam Khan, the seeds which he has been given are a vital lifeline to replace crops he lost in the flood.\u003cbr/\u003e\"These seeds are good quality, and produce more crops for us,\" he says holding a palm-full of the red-coloured seeds. \u003cbr/\u003e\"When the seeds are good quality, it grows into a seedling fast. When the seed is not good quality then we plant it and the seedlings spoil, and our harvest is less.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe outlook for Khan is good, now that the flood waters have receded and he has quality new seeds to plant. \u003cbr/\u003eBut nationwide the outlook remains bleak for many farmers, who account for most of the 20 (m)million affected by the floods. \u003cbr/\u003eIrrigation channels across the country have silted up, and more than a million farm animals died in the devastation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN's Food and Agriculture Administration (FAO) along with other international aid partners and NGOs, has taken a lead in providing farmers in Pakistan's north with new supplies of seeds.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the village of Banda Mullah Khan, farmers come from miles around to get free sacks of vegetable and wheat seeds as well as fertiliser.\u003cbr/\u003eWorkers load up wheelbarrows with sacks which are branded with the FAO and USAID logos.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local FAO coordinator, Naimat Ullah says farmers have been taking the free seeds and planting them. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are hoping that these people actually needed the seeds, and it is very timely being distributed, you can see that the distribution is ongoing to these farmers. So when they get these inputs, we have events and we have evidence where we have seen then the cultivation already started by these farmers, and the feedback from the farmer is very good.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN is distributing sacks of wheat seeds and fertiliser to 150-thousand households in the northwest. \u003cbr/\u003eFamilies also receive a smaller amount of peas, spinach, turnip and tomato seeds. \u003cbr/\u003eThe wheat seeds are paid for by the US, and come in sacks stamped \"A gift from the American people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor some farmers living in abject poverty, like widow Wala Jan, the aid is a vital lifeline.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I took the seeds to sow in my field. They are providing fodder for cattle and rudimentary veterinary care. \u003cbr/\u003eFor tens of thousands of farmers in northwest Pakistan the seed aid has come just in time, allowing them to plant
