Various exteriors of G8 venue\u003cbr/\u003eLeaders of the G8 (Group of Eight) will push for common positions on promoting democracy in Iran, combating climate change and coordinating their exits from huge government financial stimulus measures during an annual summit to be held in L'Aquila, Italy, this week.\u003cbr/\u003eItalian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the summit's host, boasts that 90 per cent of the world economy will be represented by 39 nations at the three-day summit, which was moved from sun-drenched Sardinia to quake-stricken L'Aquila to boost the local economy and reconstruction efforts.\u003cbr/\u003eThe G8 members are Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States.\u003cbr/\u003eThe five largest developing nations - Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa plus special invitee Egypt, who meet separately on the first day on Wednesday, and nine African nations, join the main forum later mostly on topics already covered by the core eight.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite its political and economic clout, there is an increasing acknowledgement, even among some of its leaders, that the G8 is too narrow for big political and economic decision-making. \u003cbr/\u003eChina, a major exporter and holder of vast foreign currency reserves, needs to be on board in combating the global economic crisis, and along with India and Brazil remains an indispensable partner on climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel said last week the problems the G8 faces \"can no longer be solved by the industrialised nations\".\u003cbr/\u003eLeaders will look ahead to a G20 (Group of 20) summit including developing countries on September 24-25 in Pittsburgh as they continue to coordinate efforts begun at an April 2nd G20 in London to counter the world economic crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eEuropean members led by Germany have stressed the need to limit the government spending and monetary expansion resulting from efforts to stimulate national economies, fearing crippling debt and inflation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US and Britain, meanwhile, are still emphasising the need for stimulus, stressing it is too early for exit strategies.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Franco Frattini, Italian Foreign Affairs Minister said an \"exit strategy and how to face the crisis in the same time will be on the table.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the leaders discuss Iran and the regime's violent crackdown on opposition protests it won't be to impose new sanctions for its nuclear programme. \u003cbr/\u003eThat power belongs to the UN Security Council and any action is likely to be limited to condemnation, and the discussion to centre on finding and striking the right tone.\u003cbr/\u003eLeaders are expected to focus on how to balance diplomacy with tougher action, and perhaps whether nations like Germany and Italy, which have significant economic ties to Iran, would be willing to back sanctions over Iran's nuclear programme.\u003cbr/\u003eJohn Kirton, Director of the G8 Research Group at the University of Toronto, expects this G8 summit to stay true to its principles of \"open democracy, individual liberty, social advance... and send a clear signal to all of the people of Tehran.\"\u003cbr/\u003eUS President Barack Obama arrives after meetings in Moscow with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, where experts hope the two nations will make progress toward a common voice on Iran. Russia has been reluctant to criticise the Iranian leadership.\u003cbr/\u003eG8 leaders will also seek a coordinated position on climate change, including such issues as promoting new technology and cleaner energy and goals on emissions and limiting temperature increases. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the second day, the summit adds five developing countries, Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa plus special invitee Egypt will focus on getting developing nations on board. \u003cbr/\u003eDeveloping countries such as China and India are now major polluters, but argue the industrial world produced most of the gases in recent decades and should bear the costs of fixing the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eChina, despite some official statements to the contrary, could raise the sensitive issue of a new world reserve currency, after their central bank recently proposed that the world move away from a reliance on the US dollar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe summit opens to African nations on the last day, with food security topping the agenda. \u003cbr/\u003eItaly, home to both the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation and World Food Programme, is pushing for a package that could include a move toward strategic grain reserves and calls for investments in new agriculture technologies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe effort comes as Italy, along with France, have taken heat for donating only a fraction of 8 (b) billion US dollars in aid they pledged to increase aid to sub-Saharan Africa by 25 (b) billion US dollars a year by 2010 as part of ambitious plans laid out by the G8 in
