commonly referred to as  \"Mad Cow Disease\" or B-S-E - struck British dairy and beef cattle, the disease sparked  international concern.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Unites States banned the import of meat and other potentially infected products  from Britain and other countries where the disease exists.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, no \"Mad Cow Disease\" has been reported in the U-S, and federal public health  agencies have taken steps to prevent its emergence.\u003cbr/\u003eMembers of the House of Representatives Committee holding Wednesday's hearing say  the hearing  was not designed to scare people.\u003cbr/\u003eThey just want to find out if there are other steps the government should be taking to  prevent the disease spreading in the U-S.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:(English)\u003cbr/\u003eWe don't want to scare people to think that there's a crisis, we don't want to overreact,  we want to act in a balanced, reasonable manner.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Representative Henry Waxman, Democrat, California\u003cbr/\u003eEvidence has surfaced that human consumption of disease infected beef has been  responsible for the emergence in Britain of a human form of \"Mad Cow Disease\" called  C-J-D, also a brain disease.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a National Institutes of Health scientist says there is no evidence that any human  being has ever contracted a form of this disease by eating beef. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd no scientific link between Mad Cow Disease and C-J-D has ever been established.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:(English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"There is no definitive proof that a human being has become affected with any of these  diseases, from any animal affected with those diseases.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Clarence Gibbs Jr., National Institutes of Health\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite the fact that no scientific link has been established between Mad Cow  Disease and the similar human C-J-D, the government and affected industries are  viewing C-J-D very seriously, and they're taking steps to prevent the further spread of  the disease. \u003cbr/\u003eF-D-A Deputy Commissioner Michael Friedman says the F-D-A is taking strong steps  to ensure that C-J-D does not affect the nation's blood supply.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are currently no documented cases of anyone contracting C-J-D through blood  transmission. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Friedman says although the risk is small, scientific knowledge is still incomplete. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE:(English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We know that there are C-J-D individuals donating blood unbenounced to themselves  and to the blood bank, and yet we're not seeing a rise, and we're not seeing cases of C- J-D resulting form that.
