Wide of 'Head' sculpture (1911-1912)
Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani is being remembered at a retrospective of his work, in Madrid.
The exhibition, a rare opportunity to see both the paintings and sculptures by the troubled artist, features over 100 separate pieces of art.
In addition, the show features a collection of works thought to have inspired the artist the most.
An exhibition celebrating the creative talent of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani is being held in Madrid.
The show, housed in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, promises to offer an insight into Modigliani's art and main influences during his turbulent life.
Modigliani's life was marred by poverty, stormy relationships, and drug use, that all led to his premature death 1920.
Born into a wealthy cultured Jewish family in Livorno, Tuscany, he left for Paris in 1906 to experience the capital's bohemian life.
There he toured art galleries and was deeply impressed by the vitality and suggestive power of works by Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
Not long after, he met Picasso and began to rent a ramshackle studio next to him in the Bateau-Lavoir at 13 Rue Ravignan in the French capital.
Guillermo Solana, the museum's director, says Modigliani incorporated elements of static sculpture in his paintings.
Because of this technique, Modigliani's paintings have a very solemn air, according to Solana.
One sculpture, entitled the 'Head', stands close to two portraits of women entitled 'Anna Zborowska' and 'Polish Woman'.
While in Paris, Modigliani was unable to sustain the comfortable existence he had enjoyed with his parents.
He soon fell into a lifestyle characterised by the abuse of alcohol, including powerful absinthe, hashish smoking and unusual behaviour.
He painted with exaggerated gestures, sometimes shouted at his models and often destroyed canvases when they did not match expectations.
His only solo exhibition while alive, at the Berthe Weill gallery in December 1917, was raided by the police for being "scandalous."
Solana says that after a series of long drawn out negotiations the museum has been able to finally organise a retrospective of the artist's works.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza has coaxed private collectors and galleries from around to world to loan significant works by the Italian artist and many of the giants who influenced him.
While deep Italian Renaissance roots are clearly visible in Modigliani's compositions, it is possible to trace how his unique style evolved.
His characteristic elongated, oval heads emerged after he was influenced by Picasso's 1907 "Head" and Constantin Brancusi's sculptures.
In particular a sublime "Prometheus" (1911) by Brancusi, loaned by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
The Italian artist's popularity has soared thanks to exhibitions over the years in Rome, Paris and St. Petersburg.
Solana says many private owners had to be convinced to lend their prized Modigliani's.
Despite some initial difficulties, the museum was able to secure 126 works by the artist.
One woman attending the exhibition says she never know he was a sculptor.
On show is also a large nude of a woman Modigliani painted in 1917.
Another visitor says she is surprised by the beauty of his nude portraits.
The Italian painter also painted some of his friends, like the poet Max Jacob in 1916-1917.
One man says the exhibition has been very well researched.
Some of the most striking exhibits are sculptures, like the serene "Head" (1911-12), hewn out of solid limestone.
Modigliani died tragically of tubercular meningitis on a cold winter's day in January 1920 at the age of 35.
His distraught girlfriend, Jeanne Hebuterne, pregnant with their second child, killed herself by jumping from the fifth floor of a building two days later.
"Modigliani and his time" runs from February 5 to May 18, 2008.

<div
