Ni and other patients leaves the flying eye hospital\u003cbr/\u003eIn 2002, the World Health Organisation estimated some 124 million people had low vision and another 37 million were totally blind, mostly from cataracts and glaucoma. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Asia-Pacific, the world's most populated region, is home to 53 percent of all visually impaired people. 17 percent are in Africa, according to the WHO.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for the past twenty years an unusual aircraft has been flying specialists surgeons around the world to help save or restore the sight of thousands of people, and training local surgeons so they can help many more. \u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this month the ORBIS flying eye hospital arrived for the first time in Vietnam. \u003cbr/\u003eSeven-year-old Lam Vu Nhat Ni sits perched on her father's lap, snuggling a teddy bear inside a very special airplane. \u003cbr/\u003eNi was born with cataracts that have progressed in the past year, making it hard for her to write inside the lines of her exercise book at school, or ride her bike without bumping into things.\u003cbr/\u003eToo poor to fly to Thailand or Singapore for advanced medical care, Ni is among a handful of patients selected to have surgery at Danang's airport, aboard the ORBIS International flying eye hospital, a converted DC-10 complete with operating room and rotating volunteer doctors from across the world. \u003cbr/\u003eNi travelled six hours from her remote village with her father who earns just US$50 a month farming rice.\u003cbr/\u003eNi says that she wants her eye to be fixed so she can play with her friends and help her parents with chores. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two-week stop in Danang this month was the flying hospital's first time in communist Vietnam, arriving after a four-country tour in Africa. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has travelled to more than 70 developing countries for nearly a quarter century. \u003cbr/\u003eCataracts, which cause nearly half of the world's blindness, are common in aging people, but some children also are born with them. \u003cbr/\u003eThe procedure to remove the cloudy lenses is fairly simple, but requires special instruments and skilled doctors. \u003cbr/\u003eTrachoma, a chronic bacterial infection that causes the eyelids to turn inward resulting in eventual blindness, is another problem that can easily be treated with antibiotics or surgery if caught early. \u003cbr/\u003eDiabetes is also on the rise in the developing world, presenting even more challenges.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the flying hospital ever touches down, ORBIS sends a team into the country to ask which procedures doctors want to observe, based on their experience and the equipment they have to work with at their hospitals. \u003cbr/\u003eThe front section of the plane has been converted into a classroom, complete with a medical library and a big screen that broadcasts close-up interactive surgeries from the operating room, located in the middle of the aircraft. \u003cbr/\u003eLam Van Hung, Ni's father, said that he was nervous for his daughter, but confident that all would go well.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn Ni's case, Dr. Douglas Fredrick, a paediatric ophthalmologist from the University of California, San Francisco, removed her cataract alongside Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Chi, Danang's only physician who performs eye surgery on children. \u003cbr/\u003eLeaning over Ni, wearing blue hospital scrubs inside the mini operating room, Fredrick explained every step, offering pointers he'd learnt over the past 20 years.\u003cbr/\u003eVietnamese doctors on board scribbled notes and peppered him with questions. \u003cbr/\u003eDr. Fedrick says Ni's operation was successful. \u003cbr/\u003eThe New York-based charity has not only saved or dramatically improved the sight of thousands through surgery on the plane, but estimates it has also trained some 124,000 doctors, nurses and other health workers to perform the procedures themselves.\u003cbr/\u003eOliver Foot, the organisation's president and executive director, says it is more important to teach one doctor how to operate than to cure thousands of blind people and then leave and take the knowledge with them. \u003cbr/\u003eFoot says that teaching local doctors will enable them to pass on the skills to their colleagues. \u003cbr/\u003eSince the plane began flying in 1982, Foot estimates millions have had their sight restored through the skills left behind by ORBIS' doctors. But that is a small dent in the overall level of preventable blindness, and eye conditions plaguing the poor. \u003cbr/\u003eThe flying hospital also has a laser room and a sterilisation facility that teaches nurses how to handle and properly clean expensive instruments needed for the delicate eye surgeries. \u003cbr/\u003eAnaesthesiologists are also trained, and family members are even allowed to wait in the recovery room, complete with white vinyl floors, three beds and more state-of-the-art equipment than most Vietnamese hospitals. \u003cbr/\u003eA new team of volunteer doctors will board the plane at its next stop in China, while others will return to Vietnam for follow-up visits with the patients.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Ni's case, the results were immediate a day after the surgery when the bandage was removed and she was delighted to be able to see her father clearly. \u003cbr/\u003eShe will need glasses, but should now be able to read 5-point type.\u003cbr/\u003eClients are reminded:
