Close view of portrait by Hans Balding Green\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eNew York officials are investigating claims that artworks displayed in the city's Museum of Modern Art were stolen from victims of the Holocaust by the Nazis during World War Two.\u003cbr/\u003eThe subject of the probe is a collection of Austrian paintings, and the growing controversy has rocked the art world. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's the latest and perhaps most visible case in the efforts to trace the lost legacy of art plundered by the Nazis.\u003cbr/\u003eThis portrait by Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele is one of a collection of the artists' works at the centre of a dispute rocking the insular world of museum art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe collection was part of an exhibit last autumn at New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), on loan from the Leopold Foundation in Vienna Austria. \u003cbr/\u003eBut those works are now under the control of New York City officials, thanks in part to Rita Reif, a semi-retired arts reporter for the New York Times.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says one of the paintings in the collection on display, seen here in this art book, was actually owned by a relative.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to her, the work, entitled 'Dead City Three', was owned by a Viennese writer-comedian named Fritz Grunbaum. \u003cbr/\u003eReif says the Nazis confiscated the painting before sending Grunbaum to die in the Dachau concentration camp.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd she says proof that Grunbaum's and other works from the Schiele collection were plundered by the Nazis comes from their own records.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Nazis seized the collection and they documented it. We have the written documentation by an appraiser for the Nazis who listed the painting summarised. That's how we know how many art works there were. We have those lists from the archives of Vienna.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Rita Reif, former New York Times Arts writer\u003cbr/\u003eHow \"Dead City\" made its way back into the art world, before being bought by Austrian collector Rudolf Leopold, is unclear. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Reif's claim was enough to spark an inquiry by New York City officials while the Schiele exhibit was at MOMA.\u003cbr/\u003eThe probe led to the seizure of the collection by the authorities while they review the ownership of works in the exhibit.\u003cbr/\u003eCourts are to decide the fate of the collection in September, and the investigation has prompted the current owner -- the Leopold Foundation -- to express its outrage over the seizure.\u003cbr/\u003eThe growing concern over emerging Holocaust art cases was certainly on the mind of MOMA's director Philippe De Montebello on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking luncheon in Washington D-C, he declined to address the Schiele exhibit specifically. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he did address the fact that museums across the U-S are faced with a renewed task of finding the truth behind the works they own and exhibit.  \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the event our research or that of independent groups generates the claim of the allegedly confiscated art.  We will respond promptly to resolve the matter in an equitable and mutually agreeable manner with the claimant, utilising where appropriate the avenue of mediation.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Philippe De Montebello, Director, Metropolitan Museum of Art\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to De Montebello, the effort to find the truth has prompted a set of guidelines to be adopted by U-S art museum, which govern the research and verification art ownership. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while ownership is part of the history of art, De Montebello says there are other issues now in play that museums must consider, perhaps complicating the issue further. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Should museums necessarily give up paintings bought in good faith? This is why we will call for mediation. Every instance is going to turn out to be very different. One will also come into a situation as you've already seen of disputes among heirs. A lot of things have to be verified.  There is the whole question of an intervening half century, a great many good faith purchases, public interest.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Philippe De Montebello, Director, Metropolitan Museum of Art\u003cbr/\u003eDe Montebello says museums in the U-S and Europe are working to trace some 20 per cent of the thousands of art works originally confiscated by the Nazis and their curators. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever complex the task of tracing ownership, descendants such as Nick Goodman are determined to find what they say is rightfully theirs.\u003cbr/\u003eGoodman, now residing in Los Angeles, is the descendant of Friedrich Gutmann -- a German banker living in Holland during World War Two.\u003cbr/\u003eWorks such as these by Degas and Renoir are among the paintings Goodman says were part of his grandfather's collection.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Grandfather Gutmann sent his paintings away for safekeeping to Paris, he was shipped off to a Nazis camp where he died.\u003cbr/\u003eNick Goodman says he's just carrying on the decades-long search of his own father to find his grandfather's paintings. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's justice. You know my family was robbed, my grandparents were murdered, the inheritance that should have come to my aunt and father never did - and it would have come down to my brother and I and it hasn't. Partly we'd like it for that, partly also a vindication for my father's fifty years search. He's spent fifty years or so looking for these paintings and went to his grave thinking he'd failed.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nick Goodman\u003cbr/\u003eGoodman received a cache of documents after his father's death as part of an estate. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has used those documents to help trace some 15 works of art he claims belonged to his grandfather. \u003cbr/\u003eBut Goodman's task is complicated by the fact that the works he has found are not in the possession of museums, but by private owners. \u003cbr/\u003eGoodman and his family have been able to trace some of the lost paintings, but have yet to receive those works from current owners.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'd really like to get at least one of them back.
