Wide of street scene\u003cbr/\u003eJapan took a new step towards achieving its long-held wish of resuming commercial whaling by hosting an international conference which began on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eTopping the agenda is finding a way to \"normalise\" International Whaling Commission (IWC), originally set up to benefit the whaling industry but now largely seen by critics as over-protective of whale populations around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eJapan, feeling it has long been fighting an unproductive battle at the International Whaling Commission along with Norway and Iceland to reinstate whaling for profit, has invited all 72 member countries of the IWC to attend a three-day confab, called \"the Conference for the Normalisation of the International Whaling Commission.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Fisheries Agency, which has organised the event, says the meeting is being held outside the framework of the IWC \"in order not to repeat confrontations\" seen at past IWC annual meetings.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the conservation group Greenpeace, long hostile to Japanese whaling policy, accused Japan of trying to 'pack' the meeting by inviting nations such as St Kitts and Nevis - a Caribbean country with no whaling interests - with thinly-disguised financial inducements.\u003cbr/\u003eSt Kitts-Nevis delegate Cedric Liburd said however that his country would not be bribed by anyone and had the right to attend the meeting.\u003cbr/\u003e\"St Kitts-Nevis believes that, as an independent nation, we have a right to attend IWC meetings and any other meetings throughout the world.
