So, within a few years, really between 1905 and 1914, they put together the most fabulous collection of modern art that we could imagine.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLeo and Gertrude Stein set up house together and hosted regular salons for artists and intellectuals - a melting pot for the new ideas of the time.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were the first people to buy and collect Matisse and Picasso - often in the face of public opposition.\u003cbr/\u003eMatisse's portrait of woman in a hat - \"Le Femme au Chapeau\" - caused a scandal when it was first shown.\u003cbr/\u003eThe vivid, unnatural colour outraged the art establishment - but not Leo.\u003cbr/\u003eLeo's support for the colour revolution that Matisse introduced was the beginning of a highly productive relationship says curator Cecile Debray:\u003cbr/\u003e\"The purchase of this work of art which, on top of that, is at the heart of the scandal of the Cage au Fauve will immediately place the collection into the category of the avant-garde. Almost single-handedly, Matisse put an end to naturalistic painting and opened the door to much of modern art that was to follow.\u003cbr/\u003eThis was a period of intense and revolutionary change in French art. The 1907 nude by Matisse called \"Nu Bleu: Souvenir de Biskra\" - from the Stein's collection - is one of the pivotal moments of 20th century art says Cecile Debray:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Yes it is a very important work of art, both for the evolution of Matisse and for the influence that it had on Picasso, on his work that would ultimately lead to the \"Les Demoiselles d'Avignon\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition contains a pictorial history of one of the great eras of modern art, the first decades of the 20th century - and it's all down to the vision and determination of one family.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Matisse, CÄÅ¼Ëzanne, Picasso - The Stein Family\" is at the Grand Palais in Paris from 5 October 2011 to 16 January 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eIt will then be shown at the
