But rather than take a back seat  to dazzling special effects, the film gives Portman another chance to display her fine  acting ability and enhance her growing reputation as one of Hollwyood's most talented  young actresses.\u003cbr/\u003eDirected by WAYNE WANG  (Stepmom, The Joyluck Club), the well- crafted weepie  stars Portman as a stubborn 14- year- old (Ann) who is forced against her will to leave  behind her safe and secure childhood home in Bay City, Wisconsin and join her mother  (Adele) played by SUSAN SARANDON on a flight of fancy and relocate to Beverly Hills.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring their journey to the west coast the pair are constantly bickering over how Ann  has never met her Egyptian biological father, how Adele walked out on Ann's stepfather  and how Adele is pushing her daughter into acting hoping that life in sunny Los Angeles  will fulfill her dreams.\u003cbr/\u003eIn their first hellish year in the city moving from one rundown apartment to the next, Ann  is still very unsettled and resentful and Adele still has stars in her eyes. In a complete  role reversal, it's the daughter who displays common sense while her flighty and  irresponsible mum is somewhat detached from reality.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Adele goes in pursuit of romance only to find a one night stand is as far as she  progresses, Ann goes through a painful coming of age underlined by her studying in a  her new school and her ill fated attempt to contact her real father.\u003cbr/\u003eThe turning point between the feuding pair comes when Adele sneaks into an audition  that she has forced upon her daughter and is shocked to see Ann deliver a monologue  that mimics her word and gestures. From then on there's a growing understanding   between them as the relationship becomes less fractious and more loving.\u003cbr/\u003eThe film, based on Mona Simpson's 1986 novel was very nearly derailed when Portman  rejected the script because of a risque nude scene. Sarandon then threatened to quit  the movie if Portman was not on board.\u003cbr/\u003eThe filmmakers tried to remain calm. They went back to the drawing board and had   screenwriter Alvin Sargent (''Ordinary People'') rework the script. Recalls Wang, ''We  said to each other, 'Hey,  it's Natalie, we'll make it work.''' They sent a sanitized rewrite  to Portman, and she accepted. \u003cbr/\u003e''I never want to change a writer's vision,'' she says, ''but when they did that for me, it  was such a nice feeling.''  The revised scene features a clever twist: a boy in his   drawers and a passionate... hug. Despite the changes, explains Wang, the scene was  still filmed on a closed set, with ''a lot of long discussions about underwear.''\u003cbr/\u003eSarandon was pleased too. ''I think it's better. Natalie's integrity actually forced the  writer to be a tad more inventive.''\u003cbr/\u003eBorn in 1981, Natalie made her big screen debut in Luc Besson's film 'Leon'(A.K.A.   The Professional). Since then she has also had roles in Heat, Beautiful Girls,  Woody  Allen's Everyone Says I Love You and Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! \u003cbr/\u003eSusan Sarandon has appeared in scores of films and is regarded as one of the most  talented and intelligent actresses of her generation taking on numerous heavyweight  roles. She won an academy award for Dead Man Walking.
