on Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the aid agency said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe hostage was identified as Red Cross employee Julien Grosclaude, the spokeswoman said. \u003cbr/\u003eShe said masked men entered the Red Cross office in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis on Tuesday afternoon and seized Grosclaude at gunpoint. \u003cbr/\u003eShe said the hostage has since been able to make a phone call from captivity and that he was not harmed during the abduction. \u003cbr/\u003eThe abduction came just hours after Israeli troops surrounded a West Bank prison and demanded the surrender of a top Palestinian militant and his followers who have been held there for four years. \u003cbr/\u003eSince then, attacks on British property and symbols were reported throughout the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with the Palestinians blaming Britain and the United States for the Israeli assault on Jericho's prison on Tuesday morning. \u003cbr/\u003eThe prisoner's safety was supposed to be guaranteed by the presence of British and American monitors, but these monitors withdrew from the jail shortly before the Israeli assault. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Ramallah, an angry crowd gained entrance to the offices of the British Council and threw furniture and office equipment down to the street. \u003cbr/\u003eThey refrained from setting the premises on fire only because there were other tenants in the building.\u003cbr/\u003eElsewhere in Ramallah, the local branch of British bank HSBC was attacked and the ATM (automated teller machine) destroyed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe British Consulate in Jerusalem
