Close up of Methane Hydrate\u003cbr/\u003eThe discovery of large deposits of methane hydrate off the Japanese coast, indicates the country may have a new long term energy source. \u003cbr/\u003eA small lump of methane hydrate ignites when it comes into contact with a flame. \u003cbr/\u003eThis flammable crystal may hold the secret of Japan's future energy needs. \u003cbr/\u003eModern Japan is cash rich, but resource poor, but a recent discovery of large reserves of methane hydrate off the northern Japanese coast, gives new hope. \u003cbr/\u003eIt may resemble a snowball, and it certainly has an icy origin. \u003cbr/\u003eThe compound is created when methane gas and water molecules are compressed at high pressure and freezing temperatures, similar to those in the oceans depths around Japan. \u003cbr/\u003eBlankets of this frozen fuel have been shown to exist in the sea beds off Japan and elsewhere. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to current estimates, worldwide resources is estimated at twice the amount of carbonised energy as the earth's coal, oil and gas resources combined.\u003cbr/\u003eDeposits around Japan alone are estimated to be enough for 100 years' consumption of Japan's current energy usage.\u003cbr/\u003eJapanese government began to support the research in 2001 in order to assess the volume and distribution of the deposit of the potential energy around Japan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe team of Japanese scientists from University of Tokyo, Japan Agency for marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and other institutions have now confirmed the existence of a  reserve of methane hydrate under the seabed off the coast of Niigata. \u003cbr/\u003eUsing an unmanned submarine and they extracted the methane hydrate from the sea floor.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (Japanese) \u003cbr/\u003e\"We did not know how much of methane hydrate is buried under the seabed surrounding Japan.
