made up of some fifty thousand  sculptures etched into caves and rock faces scattered throughout the region. \u003cbr/\u003eTogether they depict one of the largest portrayals of the principles of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd thanks to the work of restoration teams  visitors can now see the ancient masterpieces at  the Baodingshan grotto almost exactly as they looked when they were first made by the artisans of the Song Dynasty. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rock sculptures at the Baodingshan grotto are arguably Dazu's richest cultural collection.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 10,000 statues depict Chinese Buddhist doctrine.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the most striking collection of carvings warns against misfortunes and suffering in the afterlife.\u003cbr/\u003eThe niche (an ornamental recess in a wall) of the Nether World is 12 metres (40 feet) high. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's 133 statues depict the 18 Buddhist stories of 'Hell'. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is the world's largest example of these teachings in Buddhist art. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Baodingshan project  took  66 years  to complete (1179-1245 AD). \u003cbr/\u003eIt was financed by donations, collected by one dedicated monk called Zhao Zhifeng.  \u003cbr/\u003eLiu Xiangao, Director, Dazu Rock Carvings Museum says society in the region was very economically and culturally stable during the Song Dynasty\u003cbr/\u003ePreserving all the carvings in this UNESCO World Heritage site is a difficult task. \u003cbr/\u003eThis 1,000 handed carving covers an area of 88 square metres, each hand is completely individual and each contains an eye.\u003cbr/\u003eYan Xuefang, Senior Preservation Engineer, Dazu Baoding Shan Rock Carvings says that water and pollution cause deterioration of the rock.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the 13th century artisans knew a thing or two about water. \u003cbr/\u003eInside the 'Cave of Full Enlightenment' lies a fully preserved example of an internal drainage system.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dragon's tail  that runs above the heads of the 12 Bodhisattvas is a drain pipe that empties into a servant's cup.  \u003cbr/\u003eWater flows from the cup into an underground channel. \u003cbr/\u003eLiu Xiangao, Director, Dazu Rock Carvings Museum says the carvings demonstrate that the local sculptors were drainage specialists and structural engineers as well as artists.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 1.5 million tourists visit the Dazu Rock Carvings each year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe carvings combine Buddhist scriptures with Chinese Taoism and Confucianism  to form lessons in how to live life.\u003cbr/\u003e'The Niche of Parental Love' has 44 statues depicting  the key stages of adult life from praying for a son (as apposed to a daughter) to conception, birth and old age. \u003cbr/\u003eSakyamuni's 'Niche of Filial Piety' (relation of child to parent) represents the importance of repaying one's parents for their kindness.\u003cbr/\u003eThe huge Manjusri Bodhisattva is holding a stone pagoda that weighs 500 kilogrammes.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt has stood steady for more than  800 years due to the drape of its cloak which acts as a counterweight.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Baodingshan carvings at Dazu are unique.  \u003cbr/\u003eChina has several ancient sites with frescos and sculptures, but this is the only collection
