More and more we have realised that our medium is glue, it is an adhesive. Various of sunlight reflecting on canal\u003cbr/\u003eThe Venice Biennale gets under way this week, drawings crowds of art lovers from all over the world.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the biggest event in the art calendar and every two years the Biennale packs in more and more countries and artists fighting for attention.\u003cbr/\u003eFor centuries the city of Venice has weathered successive waves of jealous invaders. \u003cbr/\u003eNow the tranquillity of the city the Italians call \"La Serenissima\" (The Most Serene Republic of Venice) is disrupted only by tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eThis week, hordes of art lovers are descending on Venice to indulge in the biggest contemporary art festival in the world.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's an invasion of international cutting edge culture. This upturned tank outside the American pavilion is a work of art\u003cbr/\u003eThe Venice Biennale is the most stellar event on the art calendar - it's the place to see and be seen, and to grab attention if you can.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery two years more than a quarter of a million art lovers converge on the city, criss-crossing bridges and canals to seek out all that's new and controversial in contemporary art.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the 54th edition of the Biennale.  Aside from a few wartime cancellations the Venice Biennale has run continuously since 1895.\u003cbr/\u003eThe art is arranged by country, many with permanent national pavilions in the area known as the Giardini. \u003cbr/\u003eFrom San Marino to the USA, countries of all sizes are represented. There are 89 countries taking part this time round with Haiti, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia among the newcomers.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery conceivable style of art is on show - much of it edgy, some of it tricky to interpret.\u003cbr/\u003eThe artists at the American pavilion seem to be out to challenge the US role as superpower policeman to the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tank is the work of US-based artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's all fair game says Lisa Freidman, curator of the US pavilion:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have an overturned military tank with a treadmill, and there is a USA track and field member who runs on top of it for 15 minutes ever hour. Obviously there are associations between international competition and military competition and war, and because the tank is juxtaposed with the United States pavilion, the pediment that reads the United States, it brings up associations with American militarism.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eContemporary art can come in many guises says Guillermo Calzadilla, one of the artists who brought the tank to Venice:\u003cbr/\u003e\"Sometimes artists are asked what is your medium, who medium do you use? Do you use sculpture? Do you use painting? More and more we have realised that our medium is glue, it is an adhesive. It is something that can help us join different interests and different motivations, in a way that when put together, it can create a spark.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAthletes are also involved in another installation at the American pavilion, traditionally one of the most influential and prestigious spots at the Biennale. Curator Lisa Freidman explains the complex teamwork involved:\u003cbr/\u003e\"All of the routines were choreographed with a modern choreographer, the artists, and Dave Durante, who is the US men's all round champion in gymnastics. And they produced a 12 minute routine for men, and a 17 minute routine for women that is a hybrid of modern dance and gymnastics.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor smaller countries the Biennale is a chance to get noticed by the wider art community of artists, critics and curators.\u003cbr/\u003eControversially, the Egyptian entry is devoted to the work of an artist killed by sniper fire during the protests in Tahrir Square in Cairo last January.\u003cbr/\u003eAhmed Basiony was 31-years-old when he died while filming the so-called \"Friday of Rage\" protests on January 28 (2011).\u003cbr/\u003eA line of five video projections show footage shot during the protests, mixed with a performance of Basiony running.\u003cbr/\u003eAs curator Aida Eltoire explains, the chaos of the protests is captured in the video, a powerful and poignant legacy of a crucial turning point in Egyptian history:\u003cbr/\u003e\"You physically see in the revolution footage, which was very randomly shot - night shots, day shots of him - capturing anything and everything around him. And everything that he captures is incredible because people are really there for a reason, for a very strong purpose.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe struggle for freedom of all sorts is a recurring theme at this year's Biennale. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Danish pavilion freedom of expression is explored in \"Speech Matters,\" by the Belgium-based collective, Agency.\u003cbr/\u003eCurator Katerina Gregos says: \"I think that freedom of speech is a key issue in the current public debate, and one that has become more contentious in recent times, in the light of global geopolitical developments, events like 9-11, the Danish cartoon scandals, many other things. It is an issue that has been I think fundamentally re-ignited in a very, very big way.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe official national pavilions are just the start.  Fringe events and installations spring up everywhere in Venice.  Every available space in the city is hijacked in the name of art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Venice Biennale is open to the public from June 4 to November  27,
