So this meeting is very, very important for us,\"  Kiyoshi Katusyama from the Japanese Fishery Agency told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003eTuna sashimi and sushi is a very popular dish in Japan and stocks have been depleted over the years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe discussion concerned several different types of tuna with reports of Yellowfin catches in 2006 being the lowest on record since 1984, and 44% below the 1996-2005 averages.\u003cbr/\u003eThose caught were also of an average smaller size than previously recorded.\u003cbr/\u003eTuna such as Bluefin tuna spawn both in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Mediterranean and are a migratory, warm-blooded species that can grow to nearly a ton. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fish do not interbreed, but they mix extensively in the North Atlantic, meaning that even European catches may consist of significant numbers of Bluefin tuna originating in waters around the United States and Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003eA single fish can bring in tens of thousands of dollars amid the boom in demand for dishes like sushi.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are many factors that affect the supply of tuna such as type of fishing and how many juvenile tuna are caught.\u003cbr/\u003eActivists also blame the United States for the decline of the tuna population in the Gulf of Mexico by allowing continued fishing in the spawning areas.\u003cbr/\u003eConservationists are calling for an Atlantic-wide, five-year moratorium on Bluefin tuna fishing, and for the closing of spawning areas in the Gulf of Mexico to fishing techniques that could kill Bluefin.\u003cbr/\u003eAlready, a US fisheries official said that typically they only catch about 12-14 percent of their quotes as there simply are no
