In all of those cases where people will now get water that does not contain cholera, it would mean that they will have a prolonged life expectancy and their quality of life will be a lot better," he says.
The tea bag filter's developers claim it is the only water filter in the world to kill all the bacteria, even in some of the dirtiest water.
This life saving device has been hailed as a major breakthrough in the battle against water borne diseases like cholera in poor areas, especially Africa.
Professor Cloete says: "There are many children, one out of five children in Africa under the age of five, die as a result of a water borne infection, we hope to save their lives through distributing these filters through clinics, through schools and a variety of other mechanisms, so the impact here will undoubtedly be extensive and it will make a significant difference to the quality of life to millions of people in Africa."
The filtration system is so small that it fits into the lid of over 90 percent of the water bottles on the market, making it ideal for poor people who do not have access to the more expensive filter products on the market.
Through the process of electro spinning, a tiny filter, which resembles a tea bag, is produced.
The filter was developed using nano-fibres, each about one hundredth the width of a human hair and packed together into the tea bag-like sack that filters out microscopic bacteria.
Instead of tea, the nano tech bag is filled with activated carbon which kills the harmful bacteria.
But seeing is believing and Professor Cloete finds a nearby stream to show off his filter.
He says: "So you take a filter like this over here, we insert it in here and then what you do, you scoop some water, basically you put the cap on, you put the filter on and this water is now ready to drink immediately like I will show you. All the harmful chemicals in this water have now already been removed, all the bacteria in the water has been filtered out and they will be killed by the nano fibres that are in the filter."
The university has already received tentative enquiries about the availability of the tea bag filter from authorities in flood-ravaged areas like Pakistan and China.
It costs three cents (USD) per litre of clean water it can produce.
The project has also received interest from a number of water affairs ministers from other African countries eager to see this cost effective method of delivering clean water rolled out across the continent.
The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is one of the philanthropic organisations to have made enquiries about the filter.
The filter is in the process of being mass-produced, with plans to ship them worldwide.
In some of the poorest parts of Africa, desperate locals will drink from almost any water source, making the risk of disease all too real.
Professor Cloete and his team are aware of this fact and are pushing full steam ahead for a full-scale roll out as soon as possible, hoping to save more lives before it's too late.
Importantly the filter does not affect the taste of the water.
Taking a glug from his bottle Professor Cloete remarks: "That's fresh, you must taste it to actually believe it, it's really, really excellent."
For now, this little invention, born in the heart of the Western Cape's wine lands region, is a major breakthrough in the fight against water born diseases.
Clients are reminded:
(i)
