Pan of Nile River and Warraq Island\u003cbr/\u003eOver 30 million people in Egypt live below the poverty line, according to the United Nations Development Programme.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Cairo, over a quarter of the population are said to live below the poverty line and some of them live on Warraq Island, an island that is just a short ferry trip away from the bustling metropolis of the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eCairo, the capital of Egypt,  is a bustling metropolitan city.\u003cbr/\u003eBut across the Nile River, Warraq Island presents a different face of the city.\u003cbr/\u003eThis old wooden ferry is ready to leave the west bank of the Nile in Warraq El Hadar town, northern Giza, to transport villagers from town back home  to Warraq Island.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is only one ferry to transport the some 55-thousand villagers to and from the island and the ferry is the villagers only access to the island, since there are no bridges or tunnels to connect it with Cairo or Giza.  \u003cbr/\u003eLife on the island is a far cry from the high rise buildings and hotels on the banks of the Nile.\u003cbr/\u003eOn the island there is no sewage treatment system, no sealed roads and poor water facilities.\u003cbr/\u003eVillagers still depend on the horse and cart or donkeys to get around.\u003cbr/\u003eSome villagers have called on the government to help them improve the housing and infrastructure.\u003cbr/\u003eErian Abdel Shahid's family depends on growing potatoes and corn to survive.\u003cbr/\u003eErian says there is a lack of basic services on the island.\u003cbr/\u003eHe and his family spend their day cultivating their land and feeding their cattle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe family does not slaughter any of the cattle but instead use they as dairy animals for their milk and cheese, as they can't afford to buy provisions from the nearby shop.\u003cbr/\u003eVillagers depend on water pumps to draw water for drinking, washing and cultivating crops.\u003cbr/\u003eMagda, Erian's daughter says the most basic services not available on the island.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is no medical facility and if someone becomes ill they have to be taken by ferry across the river to a hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eCommunications and electricity are non-existent leaving villagers live in complete isolation, almost completely cut off from Cairo and Giza.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is no employment here, the brick factory closed many years ago due to the lack of infrastructure. \u003cbr/\u003eErian's cousin is Sheikh Hassan, who owns the supermarket on the island.\u003cbr/\u003eHere he sells basic provisions, including macaroni, rice, sugar and salt to meet the main needs of the villagers living
