state, is in the throes of rising political fever.\u003cbr/\u003eAmid the city's ubiquitous Ambassador cars and crawling trams, a never-before witnessed political battle is being fought with a dramatic display of election paraphernalia.\u003cbr/\u003eWest Bengal has been a bastion of India's Communist parties for more than three decades, having the distinction of being ruled by the longest-serving elected government in any state.\u003cbr/\u003eThe support base for the left in rural Bengal grew substantially after they introduced land reforms and administrative decentralisation after coming to power in the state in the late 1970s.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the 2004 national elections, they won 35 out of the 42 parliamentary seats in the state.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time around, however, the fight is going to be far from easy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe top elected state official, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya, is leading the Communist campaign against the opposition alliance of Trinamool Congress and the Congress party. \u003cbr/\u003eThe coalition of left-wing parties - known as the Left Front - is promising more jobs to the voters by turning the state into an industrial hub for the manufacturing and information technology sectors. \u003cbr/\u003eBut observers say the Communists are facing a severe backlash from farmers over the issue of land acquisition for industrialisation in the state. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Left parties insist this parliamentary election is not about state issues and accuse the opposition parties of raking up controversies for political gain.\u003cbr/\u003eThe main target of their ire is Mamta Banerjee, chief of the Trinamool Congress party, who has become the most visible face of opposition to Communist rule.\u003cbr/\u003eShe led the fight against Tata motors, which wanted to set up a factory to make the world's cheapest car in Singur in West Bengal, and accused the state's government of favouring large companies over local farmers.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe ambitious Tata Nano project sparked global excitement but was upended by protests among the rural poor who felt they had been unfairly compensated when their land was purchased for Tata's factory.\u003cbr/\u003eFor almost two years, farmers and local populist politicians protested until Tata was forced to shutter its factory in Singur and move to the more business-friendly state of Gujarat.\u003cbr/\u003eHow the land was acquired has been a contentious issue, with state officials insisting most people willingly sold out. \u003cbr/\u003eFarmers and opposition politicians say many were pressured by police and officials into selling at below-market rates.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, in Nandigram, also in West Bengal, clashes between farmers and police left dozens dead in 2007 and forced authorities to scrap plans for a shipyard and a petrochemical plant spread over 22-thousand acres of farmland. \u003cbr/\u003eBanerjee's Trinamool Congress is fighting the election in alliance with the Congress party.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir rallying cry - it is time for change.\u003cbr/\u003eCongress party campaigners, like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, have been reminding people of the recent conflict over land and promising them that incidents like Singur and Nandigram will not be repeated.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Banerjee, erosion of support for the Communists among the rural poor and the growing polarisation of votes may bring significant electoral gains.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts say her soaring popularity among the rural voters and her relentless opposition to the Communists and their policies have consolidated the anti-left political forces in West Bengal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Communists are trying to counter their anti-poor image by highlighting the loss of jobs following the exit of Tata's Nano factory from the state.\u003cbr/\u003eThe electoral battle is also being fought on huge billboards lining the streets in Calcutta, depicting the gruesome violence in Nandigram that the left parties blame on Trinamool Congress supporters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe left parties are former allies of the Congress party at the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time, however, they have vowed to support a \"Third Front\" of mainly regional parties.\u003cbr/\u003eThey withdrew their support for Singh's government last year over the issue of India signing a civil nuclear energy deal with the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eThe general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) says the left parties want a non-Congress secular government to replace the incumbent Congress-led alliance.\u003cbr/\u003eThe number of seats they win in the left-ruled states of West Bengal and Kerala may decide what role they can play in determining who forms the government at the centre. \u003cbr/\u003eThe final round of voting in India's month-long election will take place on May 13.\u003cbr/\u003eResults of the massive election, which will use more than 1.3 (M) million electronic voting machines in 828,804 polling stations, are expected May 16. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the constitution, a new parliament has to be in place
