Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eFrance's small Sikh community, an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 people, was forgotten during a marathon debate before the law banning conspicuous religious signs in public schools was passed in March.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Sikhs were the first to take their troubles to court.\u003cbr/\u003eThey asked an administrative court for an urgent decision on the cases of Bikramjit Singh, Ranjit Singh and Jasvir Singh who have been kept out of class at the Louise Michel school in the Paris suburb of Bobigny since the start of the school year in September, when the new laws came in to effect.\u003cbr/\u003eThe court was initially expected to reach a decision on Wednesday, but court officials said the case was complicated and needed further study and that a decision was likely on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eFor traditional Sikhs the external appearance is sacred, and men and boys who practice the faith wear turbans to cover their unshorn hair.\u003cbr/\u003eThe law is intended to uphold France's constitutionally guaranteed principle of secularism, considered undermined by a growing number of Muslim girls wearing head scarves in public school classrooms.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities have also said they see the law as a way to fight rising Muslim fundamentalism in France and to protect the rights of women, widely viewed in the country as submissive to men if they wear head scarves.   \u003cbr/\u003eEducation Minister Francois Fillon said on Tuesday that there remain about 70 cases of students defying the law, mainly girls refusing to remove their Islamic head scarves, since the measure took effect on September 2.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 600 cases were counted at the start of the year, but most have been resolved through dialogue, as called for in the law, avoiding expulsion, the minister said on France Inter radio.\u003cbr/\u003eFillon also made it clear that the turbans of Sikhs also fall under the law.\u003cbr/\u003eThe law
