The Gloucestershire medics have found a possible link between this and the  meningitis outbreak which has been sweeping South Africa for more than ten years.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts have long believed that the overuse of antibiotics all over the world has led to an  increased resistance to the powerful drugs. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors meeting in South Africa will be told that this overuse is the root of a world-wide  health problem with the potential to reach crisis proportions.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish Medical Association chairman Doctor Sandy Macara says there is now a real  prospect that the majority of antibiotics could become impotent and fail to cure ills for  which they have been prescribed for more than 40 years.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We could have a public health problem of quite unprecedented proportions. We could  have the return of epidemics, of diseases which we thought we had not only controlled  but in some cases eliminated. Governments need to be  regulating the use of the control of antibiotics. Christine Meek's son  David died three years ago after suffering from the killer disease for just ten hours. \u003cbr/\u003eThe eight year old had been constantly taking antibiotics for ear infections since he was  a toddler and Mrs Meek believes this could have made him more susceptible to the  disease.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You know, any parent thinks gosh, you know, 1993, with all the treatments we have  you lose a child to an infectious disease. It doesn't seem possible, it was shock,  numbness, everything really.
