As well as the sun, so asked if there was any possibility of putting nests on the island and in 2000 we did one experiment and the penguins took to it straight away \".\u003cbr/\u003e26.Mid shot worker checking finished nest\u003cbr/\u003e27.Wide shot workers loading van with nests.\u003cbr/\u003e28.Wide shot nests being taken of boat on island \u003cbr/\u003e29.Several on island of worker installing nest.\u003cbr/\u003e30.Mid shot Dyer Island sign\u003cbr/\u003e31.Wide shot workers leaving for Dyer Island\u003cbr/\u003e32.Wide shot approach to Dyer Island with seals alongside\u003cbr/\u003eThe hot sun, Kelp Gulls and Pelicans are all the natural enemies of native African penguins on Dyer Island near Cape Town.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a unique project - thought to be the world's first - is underway to help the penguin colony breed without hindrance.\u003cbr/\u003eThese penguins have new homes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fibreglass nests were the brain child of local wildlife enthusiast, Wilfred Chivell.\u003cbr/\u003eHe noticed that the native African penguins on Dyer island, were exposed to the heat of the sun and were easy prey for kelp gulls. \u003cbr/\u003eSo Chivell, who runs a local boat company, decided in 2002 to construct specially designed artificial nests for the flightless birds. \u003cbr/\u003eAfrican penguins usually nest underground in guano (bird droppings) to protect them from the sun and predatory birds .\u003cbr/\u003eBut since 1850 most of the islands on the South African coast have been stripped bare of the guano, that was six metres thick in places, for use as fertiliser, leaving the penguins with no protection. \u003cbr/\u003eLauren Blamey, from Cape Nature Conservation, says the penguins here on Dyer Island are not only exposed to the elements but also to the threat of predators. \u003cbr/\u003eProject co-ordinators on the island have so far installed 200 glass fibre nests and are looking at a potential 2000 in the next few years.\u003cbr/\u003ePlacing artificial nests on the island has helped the penguins tremendously say environmentalists. \u003cbr/\u003eThe artificial nests are placed underground, insulated and designed to blend with the surroundings .\u003cbr/\u003eThe nest size was determined by measuring Penguin burrows on nearby Dassen Island. \u003cbr/\u003eMany penguins live underground and casts were made of the actual nests.\u003cbr/\u003eWilfred Chivell, the director of Dyer Island Cruises, says that the penguins took to their nests straight away. \u003cbr/\u003eThe moulds are made at Wilfred's workshop in nearby Gaansbaai. \u003cbr/\u003eSix moulds are made each day. About a 100 are installed per month.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project has caught the public's imagination and they have bought 631 nests so far.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are 2000 breeding pairs on the island, hence the target of 2000 nests.\u003cbr/\u003eThe fibreglass nesting project comes to a brief halt from  October to February while cormorants breed on the island. \u003cbr/\u003ePenguins are found in the southern part of the Southern Hemisphere, and are physically perfectly adapted for the cold water and other sea conditions.  \u003cbr/\u003eDyer Island is one of several islands in the Western
