Butcher's shop\u003cbr/\u003eItalian/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe number of cows being slaughtered at abattoirs in Rome have dropped dramatically since the Italian government decided to suspend imports of French animals more than 18 months old.\u003cbr/\u003eBovine spongiform encephalopathy (B-S-E) is commonly known as mad cow disease and has been at the heart of Europe's beef scare since 1996. \u003cbr/\u003eThat year, the European Union imposed a ban on British beef after a probable link was established between the bovine ailment and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a similar fatal brain-wasting condition in humans. \u003cbr/\u003eThe E-U ban was lifted last year with the introduction of safety measures.\u003cbr/\u003eThere also has been a rise in cases in France recently, creating a new health scare, and resulting in Italy banning French cows over 18 months old and French beef on the bone.\u003cbr/\u003eWith consumption of beef in Italy falling as a result of the scare, Rome's main abattoir slaughtered only 60 cows this week rather than the usual 200.\u003cbr/\u003eThe slaughter of horses rose, however, from 40 to 90 a week - due to an increase in consumption of horse meat.\u003cbr/\u003eRenzo Brizioli, director of the abattoir's vet department, said stricter controls on meat - imposed under an E-U ruling issued on Wednesday - will be adopted from next January.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Italian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Since the block (of imports from France) nothing has changed because now we still do the same controls on meat as before.
