thousands each year.\u003cbr/\u003eThe director of Cuba's biotechnology institute has revealed that researchers have begun testing a genetically engineered vaccine in monkeys, but remain five years away from an effective vaccine that could safely be used in humans.\u003cbr/\u003eGedardo Guillen, Director of Biomedical Research, was speaking during the  Biotechnology 2006 conference that drew 600 participants from 40 countries.\u003cbr/\u003eGuillen said it was \"strategic to work on a vaccine for the dengue virus because it has become an endemic in our region\". \u003cbr/\u003e\"Cuba is practically the only country in Latin America\" he continued, \"where the dengue has not become an endemic disease because of our successful control of the transmitter, which is the white-legged mosquito.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the Centre had been working on a vaccine for Dengue Fever since 1992.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the World Heath Organisation, at least two-fifths of the world's population is at risk of dengue, which causes fevers, severe joint pains and nausea. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands die of the illness each year, and children are especially vulnerable.\u003cbr/\u003eRising world temperatures could lead to more dengue cases by producing an increase in the population of mosquitoes, which carry the disease, experts say.\u003cbr/\u003eThe illness has the attention of the Bill \u0026amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, which awarded 55 (m) million US dollars (euro42.9 million) in grants to the International Vaccine Institute to the accelerate the development of a dengue vaccine.\u003cbr/\u003eCuba's government is working hard to eliminate the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, with house-to-house fumigation and aerial spraying in the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eSome unofficial accounts report an alarming increase in cases in Cuba, but the government has released no details about this year's contagion levels. \u003cbr/\u003eA full-blown
