Moon's shadow passing out of total solar eclipse ++MUTE++\u003cbr/\u003eA potentially dynamic total eclipse of the Sun will occur on Sunday, unfortunately though for those who live elsewhere, it will only be visible along a narrow corridor through the southern Pacific Ocean, across Easter Island, and portions of southern Chile and Argentina.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spectacle begins at sunrise some 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometres) northeast of New Zealand. \u003cbr/\u003eThe moon's shadow will sweep across the South Pacific, darkening skies over the Cook Islands, Easter Island and parts of southern Chile and Argentina.\u003cbr/\u003eThe time of greatest eclipse will occur over open water, lasting 5 minutes and 20 seconds.\u003cbr/\u003eA solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth. \u003cbr/\u003eThe moon then blocks the light from the sun and casts a shadow on Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA astrophysicist Holly Gilbert said that although the total eclipse casts a shadow on Earth, \"you have to be right in that shadow in order to witness a total solar eclipse.\"\u003cbr/\u003eGilbert said Friday that the eclipse will give scientists a rare look a the solar corona around the edges of the Sun.\u003cbr/\u003eThe solar corona goes out more than a million miles (kilometres) from the Sun's surface.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists will be looking for solar storms forming in the corona, storms with solar winds that can affect space weather and eventually, smash into the Earth's magnetic field.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The corona actually extends way out into space and we can see what we call 'coronal mass ejections' which are these huge massive amounts of material being blown away from the sun at millions of miles an hour,\" Gilbert explained.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists are also watching the Sun transition from a period of minimal solar activity as it ramps up toward a period of major solar activity.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the past several years the Sun's surface has remained relatively dormant.  \u003cbr/\u003eA new round of solar storms are slowly building up to a projected maximum period in about four years.\u003cbr/\u003e\"That might peak in 2014, and it's unclear as to how weak or how strong it will be relative to other solar maximum in the past,\" Gilbert said.\u003cbr/\u003eShe believes scientists are months away from predicting what size of these solar storms will be, and whether they will affect the Earth's magnetic field.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the storms are strong, there are dire predictions of major impacts on electrical systems, satellite communications and some computer networks.  \u003cbr/\u003eGilbert says the signs are however not clear this far out.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As we become more and more technologically advanced, we become more susceptible to these solar storms. But, it's just very difficult to know how much effect it will have during the solar maximum.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNASA has several satellites that will be trained on the eclipse and the corona.\u003cbr/\u003eFor those lucky enough to see it from ground level, scientists recommend that people wear special viewing glasses during a total solar eclipse and avoid looking directly with the
