And it''s done after a track had run over this region.  And those little round granules that you see are about one millimeter across.  And you can see that they are pushed in to a finer grade matrix. 4-inch-deep trench that should open a window into the planet''s past, scientists on the NASA mission said on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eOpportunity sat parked on the gentle slope of a small crater while digging the hole, which took six minutes to complete. \u003cbr/\u003eThe operation exposed material buried beneath the surface, including clotted chunks that could be seen protruding from the wall of the trench, said deputy principal investigator, Ray Arvidson, of Washington University.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rover measured the mineralogy, texture and elemental composition of the trench site before digging and then began a second set of observations once it completed the task. \u003cbr/\u003eFull results from the before-and-after measurements were expected on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists chose the site because earlier observations revealed it is rich in an iron-bearing mineral called hematite, which typically forms in water.\u003cbr/\u003eMeasurements should show if the mineral is limited to the surface or is present throughout the soil, Arvidson said.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile Spirit, located on the other side of Mars, continued its 1,150-foot trek to an impact crater.
