She smashed the record for prize money by a woman in tennis and she's finishes the year number one in the rankings.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliams also won the AP award in 2002, a seven-year gap that is the longest between AP Female Athlete of the Year honors since golf's Patty Berg won in 1943 and 1955.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliams captured the 2009 award in a landslide vote\u003cbr/\u003eWilliams easily out polled the runners up, which included a horse actually, Zenyatta, who won the Breeders Cup Classic in November, beating a field of male horses, and Kim Clijsters (KLY'-sturz), who won the U.S. Open. She beat Serena in a controversial ending at the U.S. Open semifinals this year, and Clijsters went 13-and-3 in her comeback after returning to the tour in August and that got her some support in the vote.\u003cbr/\u003eThat controversial ending in New York was perhaps the only stain on Williams award-winning season\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as Serena Williams player on the tennis court this year what she might be most remembered for is her blowup at the end of the U.S. Open . She was called for a foot fault late in her match against Kim Clijsters , wound up being docked a point because of her angry , threatening outburst on a line judge and that lost the match.
