Thousands of deliverymen, called Dabbawallahs, take hot meals from the kitchens of housewives to the offices of their husbands. They navigate through the crowded streets and trains using a complex system of colors and symbols to deliver lunchboxes in the sprawling city.\u003cbr/\u003eA Harvard University study analysed the system and concluded that just one in a million lunchboxes is every delivered to the wrong address.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Lunchbox\" is the story of that one lunchbox.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I live in that same city where this delivery system exists, so I'm familiar with it,\" said Khan. \"But I don't know how do they do it! What exactly is their system? I tried to understand, but I couldn't.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDirector Ritesh Batra said the idea for the film came to him after he spent time with the Dabbawallahs.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Stories choose people also, as much as people like to think they choose the stories,\" said director Ritesh Batra. \"In 2007 I was trying to make a documentary about the Dabbawallahs and I spent time with them. I embedded myself with them, became friends. It was just me, no notepads, no cameras, no microphones, and they started telling me these little germs of stories, like so-and-so housewife takes too long because she tries something new every day, the mother-in-law rules in this house, and the Dabbawallahs don't really like that, so I became interested in those germs of stories and those people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKhan plays Saajan, a widower nearing retirement who gets his meals delivered from a restaurant near his work. It's the same bland cauliflower dish every day, until he wrongly receives the lunchbox packed by Ila, a middle class housewife who is trying to add some spice back into her marriage by cooking special lunches for her husband. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The emotion of the story,\" said Khan when asked what drew him to the role. \"The unusualness of connection between these two people. And the sensuality. Understated sensuality.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNeither Saajan nor Ila point out the delivery error and they begin a correspondence via notes in the lunchbox, slowly revealing themselves to each other.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Lunchbox\" can be seen in Indian theatres beginning September 20. It also has a release date in the Netherlands on December 12.
