Wide shot of cattle walking away in field with forest in background
A Brazillian cattle rancher in the Eastern Amazon is claiming that intensive grazing is the answer to stopping deforestation.
Mauro Lucio Costa preserves 80 percent of his farm as standing forest.
He is the president of the farmers union in Paragominas - a county that wants to go green by eradicating deforestation.
Cattle ranching is the leading cause of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon.
About 18 percent of the forest has already been cleared and 1.3 million hectares were deforested last year (3.2 million acres).
Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter and cattle ranching is expanding, especially in the Amazon. Tropical soils are poor and in a few years become less productive. Ranchers then proceed to clear new areas. Until now this has been more affordable than recovering degraded land.
Since 2008 the Brazilian authorities have intensified environmental police operations in the Amazon and started confiscating herds of cattle.
A new name "pirate cattle" was given to cattle raised in illegally deforested areas by environmental minister Carlos Minc.
Through pressure from government and environmental NGO's like Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, several beef packing industries stopped buying pirate cattle.
This in turn put pressure on ranchers to stop deforestation.
On 5 October 2009, four of the largest players in the global cattle industry -- JBS-Friboi, Bertin, Minerva and Marfrig - joined forces to ban the purchase of cattle from newly deforested areas of the Brazilian Amazon from their supply chains, backing Greenpeace's call for zero deforestation in the rainforest.
Other environmental organisations like The Nature Conservancy and Imazon are working with producers to help them become legal. One county, Paragominas, blacklisted for deforestation, is making independent efforts to become "green" through a "zero deforestation" pact between the local government and producers.
With help from the Conservancy, Paragominas began satellite-referencing all rural properties and mapping their environmental situation. By law, all farms in the Amazon are required to preserve 80% of the forest, using only 20% of the land for grazing or planting. However this law has frequently been disregarded by farmers.
Mauro Lucio Costa is currently president of the local farmers association in Paragominas. His "Marupiara" farm is often termed a "model" farm and used as an example by by environmentalists and technicians of how a farm can function without destroying nature. Costa has been managing cattle in a rotational grazing system for the last ten years. He obeys the law and only uses 20 percent of his 4500 hectare farm. The remaining 80% is kept as standing forest.
The productive area of the farm is divided into 10 units containing 12 paddocks each.
Costa mixed six different species of grasses here achieving greater resistance to pestilence.
Each group of cattle spends 3 days grazing at each paddock.
The grass can then grow back during the rest of the month and the land is never exposed or degraded.
Shared by every four paddocks are water drinking troughs and bins for feeding mineral supplements to the cattle.
At the ranch, Costa frequently receives visits from neighbouring ranchers who want to learn from his experiences.
Costa claims he can produce up to four hundred kilograms of beef per hectare.
This is four times as much as most of the farmers around here.
Costa, who's father was a cattle rancher in the state of Minas Gerais, in central Brazil, says he wanted to run his farm within the law and he saw it as a challenge to achieve productivity using only the legally available land.
Costa and other ranchers here resent being treated as villains by environmentalists and public opinion. "When we came here the motto was 'integrate not to give away' so we needed to clear the forest, we were called upon to do that, and that is what we did." says Costa.
The part of the farm he cleared in 2002 still shows the remains of the forest, such as dead and burnt trees. A typical landscape for the Amazon.
Other parts of the farm, cleared in 1997 have already been turned into green rolling fields with few trees in between.
In Paragominas, a zero deforestation pact was signed between farmers and the town government.
Mayor Adnan Demachki has been vigilant, recently denouncing and halting an authorisation for new deforestation of 1000 hectares, issued by Parďż˝ state authorities.
Violations still occur and are being monitored thanks to monthly satellite images provided by the NGO Imazon.
Last July spots of deforestation were detected and denounced to the police by the mayor's office.
Deforestation still exists but is decreasing according to the mayor. "In the last 11 months, data from Imazon show we were able to reduce, compared to the previous 11 months, 86% of deforestation in Paragominas. We made a great pact with the groups in order to achieve zero deforestation."
In Belem, Jose Benito Guerrero at The Nature Conservancy headquarters is responsible for the environmental inventory of Paragominas county.
While standing on a satellite image of Santarem municipality near the Amazon river, he explains that a partial environmental inventory was conducted there and it helped slow deforestation in this soybean farming region. The same method is to be applied in Paragominas.
Every farm will be mapped in detail, showing whether the reserve area amounts to the legal 80 percent.
Farmers have agreed to find ways to compensate for their environmental "debt" whether planting trees or taking care of other forest areas.
The Conservancy and Imazon are helping Paragominas achieve its zero deforestation goal. But only with the help of local leaders like Mauro Lucio Costa can these goals be achieved.
TNC director for the Amazon, Ian Thompson believes Costa is "the guy who can show people this is possible and has become a leader for other people to see".
Percio Lima, a close ally of Costa, has also preserved a large chunk of forest, amounting to 50% of his farm.
His motivation for adjusting to environmental laws is increasingly being shared by many farmers here.
"I want my product to be certified.
