Wide Al-Azhar Park
The creation of Cairo's largest green open space out of a former municipal rubbish dump is paving the way for a wider regeneration programme.
As well restoring the run-down, adjoining neighbourhood, ancient buildings are being put to new use.
The project has led to the creation of more jobs, and is also enhancing international cultural collaboration between Egypt and European governments.
Calm at the centre of one of North Africa's most bustling cities.
An oasis of quiet and flower-strewn hills in old Cairo - where space is at a premium and inhabitants have little opportunity to escape the traffic.
For centuries this area was used to dump unwanted rubbish, until the Aga Khan's Historic Cities Support Programme came up with the idea of offering the people of Cairo the luxury of trees, plants and shrubs in abundance. The park was the first step following a number of applications to the Supreme Council of Antiquities, approximately 11 years ago.
And it didn't stop there - next the adjoining, run-down district of Fatimid or Islamic Cairo also got a face lift.
Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, says that for more than a decade he has been restoring hundreds of important monuments in the vicinity.
The project was also designed as an agent for economic development and has become a case study for creative solutions to challenges facing historic cities throughout the world.
On top of extensive ecological rehabilitation, renovation work has re-opened buildings that were previously unusable.
The neighbouring district has benefited from the scale of the restoration.
The skills learned on the job have provided countless residents with a new career, opening up the possibility of work beyond this project. From cleaning stone to excavating ancient city walls a wide range of knowledge has been built up in the process.
And the once-poor district is benefiting in terms of employment. But the extensive conservation and preservation has also called into question what use to make of these newly restored buildings.
Some of them are mosques, madrassas and other religious buildings. Others were once schools or caravanserai.
Once the work is finished each building needs a reason to exist - a reason to be maintained.
As Italian architect Stefano Bianca says the idea of giving them over to modern use has been accepted.
The restoration also extends to include former important residences.
In the case of this Mamluk palace, the restoration work has been a significant success with careful attention to detail.
It once belonged to one of the rulers of ancient Cairo. A palace that bears all the hallmarks of the position of its influential Prince.
Using the original materials to repair the palace has added to the authenticity of the restoration.
Its elaborate and highly decorative interior is witness to the wealth and influence of its former owner.
Now its elegant and extensive rooms are being used as exhibition spaces with display cabinets brought in to show off precious and rare objects. A transformation that is ideal for displays of historic items.
Maimoun Fansa, Director of the Landesmuseum of Olderburg in Germany says the atmosphere in the palace is perfectly suited to the subject matter.
This exhibition has been brought over from Germany. It talks of the relationship between Salahideen, the Muslim General and the crusaders.
The objects are on loan from museums in Germany and also from Cairo's own museum.
Prof. Claus Peter Haase, Director of the Berlin Museum for Islamic Art comments on the way the restoration of old Cairo has taken an overview of the city, so as to recreate clusters of buildings which gives a true impression of what historic Cairo once looked like.
The exhibition's opening attracted a crowd of international experts and academics.
Central to the renovation of old Cairo is making its streets and buildings live again.
And here at the Taz Palace that translates into a wealth of objects from overseas and a chance to see them at their best in authentic surroundings.
Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, points out that this unique collaboration between countries and governments will alert the local people to the importance of the place.
The initial idea was simply to give breathing space to the people of old Cairo. The park is the largest green space created in Cairo for more than a century, reversing a trend in which unchecked development covered up the city's parks.
But the scheme has taken on a life of its own and now the flowers and trees are having to compete for attention.
The Al-Azhar Park is important for tourists to Cairo because of the views of Islamic Cairo.
