And it opened doors not just for Mexican artists but for lots of artists from all over Latin America. It was only after one of her paintings sold for 1 (m) million (us) dollars in 1990 that art collectors from Europe and Asia started demanding catalogues of Latin American work. Photo of Frida on easel\u003cbr/\u003eThe excitement surrounding Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, who died 47 years ago today (Friday) continues to grow, with tributes, exhibitions and a Hollywood film due for release.\u003cbr/\u003eHer death came just days after her 47th birthday. \u003cbr/\u003eTo commemorate her birth and death this month, a traditional Mexican altar has been built in what used to be her studio, now part of the Museum of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Mexico City.\u003cbr/\u003eThis tribute to Frida Kahlo is at the place where she and one of Mexico´s greatest painters, Diego Rivera, acted out their tormented marriage.\u003cbr/\u003eHer personal effects form a little Day of the Dead altar, a tradition she helped to restore as an inherent part of modern Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003eFrida´s work and extravagant way of life served to inspire various generations of Mexican and Latin American artists.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it has only been in the last decade of  that Frida Kahlo´s contribution to Latin American art has come to light at a wider scale.\u003cbr/\u003eFridas fever is now rampant. \u003cbr/\u003eShe has become an icon both for feminist groups and the defenders of a Mexican traditional art.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd her popularity could not escape Hollywood.\u003cbr/\u003eA film based on her life, starring the Mexican actress Salma Hayek, will be released before the end of the year.\u003cbr/\u003eFrida was born in 1910 and died in 1954 of emphysema pulmonary in Mexico City, where she studied and became a teacher.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen she was 16 she was run over by a bus, suffering multiple fractures in her right foot, pelvis, spine and left elbow which would affect her for the rest of her life. During her convalescence she started to paint, evolving from realism to surrealism, expressing the contradictions and torments of her real life.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1940 she married Diego Rivera. She \"unmarried\" him - as she used to say - soon after, only to remarry him in a year later.\u003cbr/\u003eThey stayed together for 25 years, despite his being a womaniser and and her declared bisexuality.\u003cbr/\u003eShe taught painting at the prestigious state art school \"La Esmeralda\" and had her first solo exhibition  at New York´s Pullien art gallery in 1938.\u003cbr/\u003eShe also had some exhibitions in Mexico and Paris, although professionally she lived under the shadow on her husband, Diego.\u003cbr/\u003eHer most important woks are: \"Mi nana y yo\" (Grandma and I), \"Los habitantes de México\" (Mexico´s inhabitants), \"Autorretrato de tehuana\" (A Tehuana´s self portrait) and \"El nacimiento\" (The Birth).\u003cbr/\u003eShe has been described as a communist living a bourgeois life.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was cremated, her ashes remaining at her house in Mexico City.\u003cbr/\u003eThe altar will be opened to the public until the 22nd of
