Wide of 'Ana' a work by by Egyptian-German artist Susan Hefuna \u003cbr/\u003eThe Jameel Prize is one of the most prestigious art awards in the Middle East. \u003cbr/\u003eNamed after its founder and sponsor Saudi Arabian Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel Abdul Latif Jameel, the prize is awarded once every two years to a creative artist whose work takes inspiration from traditional Islamic arts. \u003cbr/\u003eShortlisted works from the Jameel Prize 2009 collection are currently on display at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation \u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition has already been to Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Syria after first being unveiled to the public at London's Victoria and Albert Museum from 8 July until 13 September 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eSheikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, the ruler of Sharjah visited to view the contemporary art works.\u003cbr/\u003eThe nine shortlisted artists whose 25-odd works are on display come from different parts of the world.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have no need to live and create in an Arab country but they must ensure that their artwork is rooted in an Islamic art tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eThis turned-wood \"Mushrabiyya\" or window screen was created by Egyptian-German artist Susan Hefunadone. \u003cbr/\u003eIt plays with the traditional idea of the privacy provided by a window cover, incorporating the word \"ana\" meaning 'I' in arabic in the decorative carving. \u003cbr/\u003eOn many levels it does the job of ensuring that the women within are sheltered from the outside world, but it also has deeper meaning.\u003cbr/\u003eTim Stanley, Senior Curator for the Middle Eastern Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London says that having the exhibition on tour has drawn attention to the genre. \u003cbr/\u003e\"To some extent we know already that by having the exhibition at the V\u0026amp;A then by touring it in the Middle East since January 2010 that we've created a higher profile for this type of work. And it has produced a very attractive exhibition.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eThese paper plates are an echo of Iznik dishes and are intricately made with a repeated message and a lattice work design.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Michel Bechara, Director of projects, British Council, UAE  the exhibition underscores close cultural links between Britain and the UAE.\u003cbr/\u003e \"The collaboration between the V\u0026amp;A Museums and the Jameel Prize is a perfect example of cultural links that are established between the Middle East and the UK.
