Confucius schools are on the increase, signalling a return to the study of the ancient philosopher after a fifty year hiatus. \u003cbr/\u003eThe great master looms large at Tongxueguan, a Confucius school in Suzhou city of eastern China's Jiangsu province, and pupils at this saturday school for Confucius traditions know when they walk past his painting, that it is time for them to learn from the great scribe.\u003cbr/\u003eEach week, 5-year-old Yu Zhenfei gets dressed in clothing based on Han dynasty designs to learn about Confucius. His teacher helps him to put on the grey cotton wraparound robe fastened with black ribbon, and black square hat, in the same way that Confucius taught his students more than 2,500 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the bell rings, a lesson starts. All the students bow to the teacher as the greeting, then sit down on a cushion with legs crossed, a manner considered to be elegant.\u003cbr/\u003eLearning the words and phrases of Confucius is one of the most important part of the lesson.  Many of the sayings extol the virtues of harmony, humility and courtesy to others.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe small private school, in the downtown area of Suzhou, was just set up this March, but more than 70 students have already enrolled for the classes.\u003cbr/\u003eAll together 7 Confucius schools like this were set up in six different cities in China like Wuhan, Dalian and Guangzhou, under the same name of Tongxueguan.\u003cbr/\u003eMany Chinese parents want their children to look to the west for education and language, but some are now looking to teach their children about China's rich history. Many of these parents studied during the time of the cultural revolution, so missed out on lessons about China's culture and tradition. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Most of the resources in our current educational system are borrowed from the west, but actually there are plenty of useful resources in the Chinese traditions of several thousand years. We can add these traditional essence to the education on our kids. If we can balance the Chinese traditions and western elements in the education of kids, then we have a global or international education,\" said Li Guangbin, the founder and General Principal of Tongxueguan. \u003cbr/\u003eLi is trying to set up a nationwide brand of Confucius school, teaching pre-school children some traditional culture, including teaching how to serve tea for the elders and guests.\u003cbr/\u003eFor five-year-old Yu living in Suzhou city, he has grown up living in globalised China. American fast-food chains, advertising, and commercialisation are simply part of life for China's next generation. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the fact that most of the Chinese kids are living in the modern world without any connection to traditions is also the reason that parents have decided to send kids to Confucius schools. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think young generation like him should inherit the old Chinese traditions. There is much that was missing in terms of learning about old traditions for my generation from 1970s, so it's especially important for children like him to catch up on these traditions that we missed out on, so that they can improve as individuals and develop personal talents.\" said Yu Qing, the father of Yu Zhenfei.\u003cbr/\u003eConfucianism has been absent from the life of ordinary people in China for a long time, while the ancient Chinese prophet Confucius was forgotten or even vilified at the height of the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s.\u003cbr/\u003eFormer Communist leader, Mao Zedong and his followers criticised Confucius, calling him feudal and old-fashioned and part of the bourgeois hierarchical thinking of the past.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the chaos and change of modern China, there is clearly a market for his old-fashioned wisdom.\u003cbr/\u003eGirls like Lin Ruyi are among these who want to seek wisdom from Confucius. Dressed in traditional-style robes, Lin and other girls took some courses in table manners and playing Guqin (an ancient Chinese zither) in another Confucius school in Suzhou.\u003cbr/\u003eShe said Confucianism provides much-needed wisdom to balance her mentality and character in the modern world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We should try to get close to these old traditions, to experience them and then have them as part of our characters. We should eventually make them as part of our life, no matter as a Chinese or as a woman,\" said Lin Ruyi, who quit her job in Beijing and came a long way to Suzhou just to take these courses.\u003cbr/\u003eThe traditional culture can keep you calm in mind, which helps you ease the tension the modern life brings you, Lin added.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd for those adopting the traditions of
