The results of six months of research into the drug, 3TC, were the big talking point in  Glasgow Sunday at an international...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors and scientists say they're hopeful a new Canadian drug could help in the fight  against AIDS. \u003cbr/\u003eThe results of six months of research into the drug, 3TC, were the big talking point in  Glasgow Sunday at an international congress.\u003cbr/\u003eDelegates arrived for the Second International Conference on Drug Therapy in HIV  Infection from around the world to share their expertise.\u003cbr/\u003eThe delegates heard that the new drug, 3TC, combined with AZT, fights the AIDS virus  better than AZT on its own. AZT is also known as Zidovudine and is the standard drug  used to try and control AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eThree-hundred and fifty-two patients took part in the trials of 3TC. The studies, in France  and Germany,  traced blood chemicals in volunteers.\u003cbr/\u003e Although investigators didn't compare symptoms or death rates which provide more  definitive proof, they nevertheless believe they have made an important discovery.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers believe the new drug 3TC, used in conjunction with AZT, is a considerable   improvement on what is already available.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This combination seems to go some way towards both those prospects:  the viral load,  as we call, it is reduced in the blood, and the immune system does seem to improve to  some extent. I think that the study is a surprise. The new drug on its own appeared to  be relatively ineffective and it is surprising to combine an established and moderately  effective drug with an apparently ineffective drug and get quite such a surprising result,  that would be a surprise.''\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dr Brian Gazzard, Clinical Director, HIV, St. Stephen's Hospital,  London.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Gazzard and his team at  St Stephen's Hospital in London carry out research into  AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers said early results suggest that using 3TC with AZT strengthens the  immune system and reduces the amount of HIV virus.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So the amount of virus in the blood goes down almost 99 per cent with that treatment,   which is quite an impressive feat I think. I certainly think this gives hope that we now  have a combination to further build on because I don't think two drugs are going to do  the job. I think we need three or four drugs. But it's nice to have two drugs that are well  tolerated and that have such a relatively great effect already.
