Wide interior NATO building, people passing in hallway\u003cbr/\u003eUS and Polish defence ministers met at the NATO headquarters in Brussels on Thursday ahead of extended ministers' meetings later in the day.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Secretary of Defence Robert Gates and his Polish counterpart, Bogdan Klich, held a bilateral meeting to discuss issues including Afghanistan and the US missile defence.\u003cbr/\u003eGates is expected to push NATO allies to send more troops and police instructors to Afghanistan at the ministers' meeting that will also face tricky questions over Kosovo.\u003cbr/\u003eNATO's mission in Afghanistan has more than doubled to 51-thousand over the past two years, but commanders say it still lacks units for key tasks like air transport and intelligence.\u003cbr/\u003eIn particular, the United States is pushing allies to provide training teams to build up the Afghan police.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice training has lagged behind efforts to forge an Afghan army, but commanders say an effective law enforcement force is key to stabilising the\u003cbr/\u003ecountry and winning support among the local population.\u003cbr/\u003eIn talks on Thursday and Friday, NATO defence ministers must also discuss how they will fill the gap left by the scheduled withdrawal of more than 3,000 US Marines in October or November.\u003cbr/\u003eGates sent in the Marines to reinforce allied troops fighting the Taliban in dangerous southern Afghanistan, but said they would only stay for seven\u003cbr/\u003emonths.\u003cbr/\u003eWashington has said it will not send extra troops to replace them, leaving it up to allies to fill the void.\u003cbr/\u003ePart of the gap will be filled by about 700 French troops moving in to eastern Afghanistan. They will free up US forces for the south, but NATO\u003cbr/\u003ewill still need to find more.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Kosovo, the United States and European allies that have recognised the independence of the territory are seeking to widen the role of NATO's\u003cbr/\u003e16-thousand-member peacekeeping force to include training for Kosovo's security forces.\u003cbr/\u003eSpain is wary, along with
