Close up of combine harvester cutting field of wheat\u003cbr/\u003eEurope's largest bioethanol refinery is nearing completion in the north east of England. \u003cbr/\u003eOwners of the plant say it will meet one third of the UK's bioethanol demand once it's up and running. \u003cbr/\u003eThey say that's the equivalent of taking 300,000 cars off the road.\u003cbr/\u003eThe world is running low on fuel and some now hope bioethanol will help top up the shortage.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe European Union has set a target that requires each member state to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through energy by 20% by the year 2020. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UK aims to have 15% of all petrol and diesel sold in the UK come from renewable sources by 2020. Within that figure the road transport fuel target is 10%. \u003cbr/\u003eWork is close to completion here at Europe's largest wheat refinery at Wilton on Teesside in the north east of England. \u003cbr/\u003eThe �250 million pound (416$ US Dollars) plant is due to start making its first bioethanol before Christmas, and expects to be in production in early 2010.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce up and running, owners Ensus say it will produce more than 400 million litres of bioethanol - that's one third of the UK's bioethanol demand.\u003cbr/\u003eIt will also put out 350 thousand tones of high protein animal feed and 300 thousand tones of carbon dioxide.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"What we do grow well in the North of England is high starch wheat,\" says John Seymour, farmer and rural affairs spokesman for North East Biofuels.\u003cbr/\u003eEnsus say the refinery will be completely self sufficient - nothing will be wasted in the brewing process. \u003cbr/\u003eJohn Pinkney, technical director for Ensus says: \"We're really producing three products on this plant from the wheat, the ethanol which is about a third of what comes in, ethanol of course is going off into the biofuel. We're producing the CO2 from the fermentation and that CO2 is all recovered and used in the food and beverage industry.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe refinery will process about 1.2 million tons of wheat a year sourced mainly from farmers in the north of England where this type of high starch wheat is in abundance. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The UK farmers are going to recognise this as a very exciting new opportunity for them. They are going to be very keen to supply wheat into it and we are very confident that they will be able to maintain their supplies,\" says Pinkney.\u003cbr/\u003eBioethanol may be clean, but some environmental groups have accused it of encouraging deforestation and exacerbating climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eEnsus argue that their animal feed produce will help decrease deforestation by displacing imported soybean from Argentina and Brazil.\u003cbr/\u003eEnsus is owned by two U.S. private equity funds, the Carlyle Group and
