Here in Miami, students are testing out their own model designs - with the help of a massive wall of fans at Florida International...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eIn a country where hurricanes hit, it's vital that high-rise buildings can stand up to extreme weather. \u003cbr/\u003eHere in Miami, students are testing out their own model designs - with the help of a massive wall of fans at Florida International University (FIU), known as the \"Wall of Wind.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe wall is made up of 12 fans that can simulate wind speeds of all hurricane categories, including a Category 5 with winds above 155 miles (249 kilometres) per hour.\u003cbr/\u003eThe challenge set was to build 32-inch (81 centimetres) tall models of 32-storey buildings that would withstand tropical storm winds and those of a hurricane.\u003cbr/\u003eEach one was designed with different materials.\u003cbr/\u003eA medal rod was placed in one model to give it more weight. \u003cbr/\u003eOthers models rocked steadily against winds similar to a category 1 hurricane, between 74 to 95 miles (120 kilometres to 152 kilometres) per hour, before falling on their sides. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Our balconies, if you noticed, had dimples around them. We were trying to simulate a golf ball effect, since golf balls are designed to have very little wind drag against them to travel farther. So this scale is about one to 150. The building model is only 32 inches tall but it represents a building that is 32 storeys tall. So the wind speeds we're seeing actually relate to tropical storm to category 1 all the way up to category 5.
