Albright, Reno and McCaffrey leaving presser.\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe U-S has decided to waive two-year old sanctions against Colombia, saying the South American nation has made gains in its war on drugs.\u003cbr/\u003eU-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright praised the Colombian police and counter-narcotics forces for their efforts.\u003cbr/\u003eThree other countries had sanctions lifted - Cambodia, Pakistan and Paraguay.\u003cbr/\u003eBut four others remained on the black list as illegal drugs suppliers - Afghanistan, Burma, Iran and Nigeria. \u003cbr/\u003eU-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright announced Thursday that her administration had decided to waive two-year old sanctions against Colombia.\u003cbr/\u003eAlbright, making the announcement on behalf of President Clinton, praised the Colombian police and counter-narcotics forces.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the wording of Albright's announcement made it clear that U-S support was for Colombia's continuing fight against drugs and not a recognition of the role of current President Ernesto Samper.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Clinton administration has always upheld the allegations that his election campaign was funded by the Cali drug cartel. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Colombian National Police and counter narcotics forces have conducted an effective eradication and interdiction effort. But the current government has not demonstrated full political support for counter narcotics efforts. Peru, for example, was the world's largest grower of coca in 1996. Last year, under president Fujimori's leadership, it reduced cultivation to the lowest level in a decade.
