The ship is specifically designed to provide support for amphibious landings by providing helicopters to...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the more unusual ships currently deployed to the Adriatic by NATO is the helicopter carrier U-S-S Inchon. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ship is specifically designed to provide support for amphibious landings by providing helicopters to transport troops and equipment. \u003cbr/\u003eNATO forces are increasingly finding themselves playing a dual role over the crisis in the Balkans.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough many carriers in the Adriatic carry a compliment of fighters that participate in the bombing campaign against Yugoslavia, the United States Ship (U-S-S) Inchon's task is mainly to carry aid to refugees fleeing the crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eSince its deployment in the Adriatic on April 10, the carrier has been flying daily missions into Albania. \u003cbr/\u003eIt carries exclusively MH-53 Sea Dragon and CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are currently 1-thousand people on board. \u003cbr/\u003eThe MH-53 is the largest helicopter manufactured in the Western Hemisphere.\u003cbr/\u003ePowered by three jet engines, it is equipped with a seven blade rotor and can carry up to 55 people.\u003cbr/\u003eThe role of helicopters during the crisis have so far been for the deployment of troops, equipment and aid supply as well as rescue efforts in instances when a NATO plane has crashed.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have 10 MH-53 helicopters, Sea Dragons, they're the nation's largest helicopters that are normally used for mine countermeasures - both in looking for mines and in eliminating seaborne mines.
