Medium shot of mountains of corn \u003cbr/\u003eFears about global warming have sparked a boom in bio-fuels in the recent years.\u003cbr/\u003eCorn-based ethanol production has been steadily rising in the United States, prompting some of Mexico's farmers to increase production of their crops to meet that demand. \u003cbr/\u003eMaize farmer Pablo Altamirando is happy to increase his crop yields. \u003cbr/\u003eAs the US finds more uses for corn, it exports less into Mexico increasing the domestic need for more maize production. \u003cbr/\u003eWhich is great news for farmers like Altamirando. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever some environmental pressure groups warn that growing crops for bio ethanol is not a good solution to the problem of climate change. \u003cbr/\u003eGustavo Ampugnani is Greenpeace's campaign director in Mexico says  some scientific evidence says producing is corn ethanol is a false economy and harmful to the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe increase in demand for corn for bio-ethanol means that there was less corn available for one of the region's favourite dishes .... tortilla. \u003cbr/\u003eTortilla prices in Mexico rose between 20 percent and 30 percent in most parts of the country in January 2007, generating protests and widespread complaints among the poor.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe rising prices for both locally produced and imported corn were fuelled by market speculation over how much US corn would be available to ship to Mexico as increasing volumes were consumed by the rapidly growing US ethanol industry. \u003cbr/\u003eThis led to the Mexican government to announce at the end of August that it will keep the price of tortillas stable until the end of the year with a new US$45 million stabilisation fund.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement marked the extension of a pact reached at the beginning of the year between the government and the corn and tortilla industry aimed at putting a ceiling of 8.5 pesos (US$.77) per kilo (2.2 pounds) on the price of tortillas. \u003cbr/\u003eIsaac Rosas is the technical coordinator for the Council of Corn Producers of the State of Puebla.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says because corn prices are increasing, more land needs to be allocated to the production, which is good for farmers in the region. \u003cbr/\u003ePablo Altamirando is one of the farmers who have already benefited from federal and state governments assistance to help small-scale farmers by providing low-cost equipment, labourers, fertilisers and pesticides. \u003cbr/\u003eRosas says they hope to produce over six tonnes of corn per cycle in Puebla. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition, Puebla's Council of Corn Producers is providing processing and packaging of dried corn kernels to eliminate the middleman and keep prices reasonable for the state's tortilla shops.   \u003cbr/\u003eNoe Matamoros is a machinery coordinator for Council of corn Producers for the State of Puebla.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the boom has much to do with the rise in prices, and now planting corn is much more lucrative.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Puebla, farmers are increasing the productivity of their lands with fertiliser as well as cultivating more hectares. \u003cbr/\u003eall.\u003cbr/\u003eSoaring demand for biofuels is contributing to a rise in global food import costs, increasing the burden for developing countries already struggling to feed their populations the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization warned in June. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the United Nations  outlook, annual maize-based ethanol output in the United States is expected to double between 2006 and 2016. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the European Union the amount of oilseeds, mainly rapeseed, used for biofuels is set to grow from just over 10 million tons to 21 million tons over the same period.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn Brazil, annual ethanol production is projected to double by 2016 from today. \u003cbr/\u003eChinese ethanol output is expected to rise to an annual 3.8 billion litres (1 billion
