When I wanted to come to the United States in May, I was told that it wasn't appropriate because of the visit of Hu Jintao.  These are the kinds of things that must be considered.  If Chen wants to visit Taiwan, he should visit all the leaders, not just the opposition leaders.  Then there wouldn't be any question.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. Cameramen and reporters after news conference \u003cbr/\u003eJoseph Wu, Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council on Taiwan, is in Washington for a series of meetings and discussions about the current political and economic situation between Beijing and Taipei.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Woodrow Wilson Centre on Tuesday afternoon, Wu maintained that Taiwanese people want the current status quo to continue as far as relations with Beijing are concerned.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, he noted that a continued build up of missiles and military strength on the mainland side of the Taiwan Strait is not very reassuring to Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eWu said increasing economic and tourist exchanges are beneficial to both sides, and that the government of Chen Shui bien welcomes increases in trade and visits.\u003cbr/\u003eWu noted that the Beijing government continues to put obstacles in the way of successful relations, as he sees it, but that Taiwan has learned to deal with these
