hand-painted - are lined up along the row of shops to entice all those looking for a taste of Nepal.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is , after all , the country's best selling piece of art.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for those slightly more familiar with the cultural and religious heritage of the erstwhile Himalayan Kingdom, the paintings embody much more than just artistic creativity.\u003cbr/\u003eThangka is a Tibetan name for a painted or embroidered Buddhist banner which was hung in a monastery or on a family altar, and carried by lamas in ceremonial processions.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso known as a scroll-painting, a Thangka is an expression of Buddhist rituals and philosophy painted on a flat surface which can be rolled up when not required for display. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Buddhist iconographic paintings are also used as visual support for meditation practice. \u003cbr/\u003eArt dealer Ramesh Shahi Khadgi has been in the business of selling Thankas for more than 20 years.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the buyers include those interested in the study of Buddhism as well as those looking for exquisite pieces of decorative art.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the elaborate prayer room of Chhiring Doma Sherpa , who is a practicing Buddhist , there is an amazing variety of Thangkas which adorn the walls.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says the Buddhist imagery represents her faith, and provides her with spiritual solace.  \u003cbr/\u003eThangkas were traditionally painted in memory of a deceased relative to aid their soul's journey. \u003cbr/\u003eThe colourful paintings contain detailed maps of landscapes and deities both wrathful and peaceful to guide and challenge the soul.\u003cbr/\u003eSome Thangkas depict the life story of Buddha , from which a soul may receive freedom from the bondage of rebirth.\u003cbr/\u003eThangkas are painted on a cotton canvas with water soluble pigments, both mineral and organic, tempered with a herb and glue solution.\u003cbr/\u003eThe canvas is specially treated before the paints are applied.\u003cbr/\u003eThen the master artist sketches in the outlines of landscape and figures.\u003cbr/\u003eAll paints used are obtained from crushed minerals and plants commonly found in the Himalayas.\u003cbr/\u003eColours are mixed carefully, and gradation takes years to perfect, as Thangkas being objects of spiritual reverence follow strict laws of colour and form.\u003cbr/\u003ePaint is then applied, the colours used appropriate to particular divinity or energy manifestation as stated in the ancient texts. \u003cbr/\u003eShading is next, the process which gives depth and dimension to the painting. \u003cbr/\u003eThe entire process demands great mastery over the drawing and perfect understanding of the principles involved.\u003cbr/\u003eDipak Joshi , a professional Thangka painter and teacher , says the  Thangkas , known as ' Pauvas ' in Nepalese, trace their origin to ancient times when art was seen as a religious offering to the deities. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the Tsering art school in Kathmandu, students are learning the intricacies of the Thangka art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe school was established in 1996 and has students from countries as diverse as England, Mexico ,Japan and China.\u003cbr/\u003eThe physical construction of a Thangka, as with the majority of Buddhist art , is highly geometric.\u003cbr/\u003eArms, legs, eyes, ears, and various ritual implements are all laid out on a systematic grid of angles and intersecting lines.\u003cbr/\u003eThe process seems scientific, but often requires a very deep understanding of the symbolism of the scene being depicted, in order to capture its essence .\u003cbr/\u003eThe foreign students say it was their quest to understand Buddhism that inspired them to learn Thanka painting. \u003cbr/\u003eThe spread of Buddhism in the west now encourages many to invest in colourful Thangkas. \u003cbr/\u003eInternational interest in Thangka art has seen a marked increase in the number of Thangkas being produced in Nepal.\u003cbr/\u003eThangka artists hope that the local Nepalese will want to learn to respect the traditions and origins of the art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local Thangka art school is trying to preserve the religious roots of the art form, even as commercial forces fuel the demand for its mass production.    \u003cbr/\u003eRegular prayer sessions at the school focus on
